Morning light in the kitchen area is something I try hard not to compromise, especially in winter. There is something about starting your day with sun coming through that just sets a different tone, and that matters more to our well being than people realise.
At Earth Rise House we worked with a palette that could easily feel ‘heavy’; dark stone, dark timber, rammed earth, but the terrazzo floor and the Portuguese plaster walls gave that fresh breath to the room. The tones and textures are actually quite complementary even if at first glance they seem like a lot. That balance is what makes the space feel grounded rather than dark and the lighting coming from the big sliding door softens everything.

Materiality sets the tone, the feel. How to combine them in harmony is what makes the difference. Here at Earth Rise House, they’re all speaking in rawness. The texture of pre-aged Australian hardwood with the smoothness of the concrete and the texture of the earth. When it’s right, you can feel it in your body. A visual and tactile experience I love to create.

Natural tones, textures and materials. The Boathouse, proudly designed by Ian Heanes in collaboration with Thais Pupio from @thaispupio_design . Cladded in fine-sawn New Guinea Rosewood, white-washed granite stone carried from exterior to interior, paired with cream polished concrete floors, complemented by an aged copper entry door. Cambia Ash timber is used for the kitchen bench and carried through to the master bedroom wall paneling.
