Some injuries aren’t visible.
Some impacts happen over time.
If your work, sport, or service puts your brain at risk, our Santa Cruz HBOT Program is here to support brain health and recovery. Participants receive discounted HBOT sessions and a complimentary 30-minute brain health consultation, while helping others affected by brain trauma.

Tag a firefighter, athlete, veteran, or someone exposed to brain injury risks.
They deserve support, too.
Wilem Banks (@wilembanks ) charges the world’s heaviest waves — and recovers like it. The 2024–2025 Biggest Paddle Wave winner (@bigwavechallenge ) is taking brain health as seriously as the ocean demands.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) floods the body with 100% pure oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure — allowing oxygen to penetrate deep into tissues, fluids, and areas with restricted blood flow that normal breathing simply can’t reach.
For athletes like Wilem, the science backs it up:
- Brain protection — Published research shows HBOT promotes brain recovery and neuroplasticity by triggering neurogenesis, synaptogenesis, and anti-inflammatory responses at the cellular level, making it particularly relevant for athletes absorbing repeated impact. (Frontiers in Neurology, 2024)
- Reduced inflammation — Studies show HBOT reduces key inflammatory markers including TNF-α and IL-6, while simultaneously enhancing mitochondrial energy production — helping the body repair faster at a cellular level. (PMC/NIH, 2024)
- Faster physical recovery — A peer-reviewed study of 41 athletes found HBOT accelerates cell recovery and tissue repair, helping eliminate fatigue and restore stamina after exercise-related muscular injury. (Chen et al., BioMed Research International, 2019)
- Sharper mind, better sleep — A randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind trial found that HBOT produced significant improvements in global cognitive function, attention, and executive function — the mental edge that separates good decisions from great ones in critical moments. (Scientific Reports, 2022)
With a Super El Niño on the horizon, the biggest swells in years are coming. The time to prepare your brain is now.
We can’t wait to see what Wilem does next season.
@healingbrainwaves is teaching us how Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can help with recovery for Mountain Bikers! Ever had a concussion from riding MTB? This can be a great way to recover.
Healing Brainwaves Foundation is offering no-cost Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) to the Mavericks community.
🧠 Please share this post!
Who qualifies: Anyone surfing Mavericks during the upcoming swells (Jan 29 – Feb 7) and wipes out during those swells.
How do you know you sustained a brain injury: brain injury symptoms can last a few seconds, hour or days and can also be delayed by a few days. If you experience any of the following after a wipeout, you may qualify: headache, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, nausea, fainting, feeling “out of it,” visual or hearing changes, anxiety, depression, insomnia, light or sound sensitivity, memory issues, trouble thinking, speaking, or maintaining eye contact, etc.
When to sign up: ASAP. As soon as you realize you’ve been concussed. Timing does matter.
Why this matters: Brain injuries have a compounding effect on the brain. Even if symptoms subside quickly, every brain injury acquired reduces the brain’s resilience, making it more susceptible to subsequent injuries.
Where: HBOT sessions take place in Santa Cruz, CA. Participants must be able to travel there.
How to access care
1. Complete the HBOT intake form (link in @healingbrainwaves bio)
2. Virtually meet with our director to complete your intake.
3. Contact our partnered clinic in Santa Cruz to schedule your HBOT session
4. Show up for your appointment and relax while you experience HBOT.
Within 24 hours of posting to her story that she needed help after a concussion, professional surfer @tessatimmons_ was climbing into @healingbrainwaves ’s Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Chamber.
After a few weeks of HBOT dives, Tessa suspects that treating her recent concussion with HBOT also helped heal past concussions. She now feels better than before her recent concussion and is back chasing waves around the globe.
We, at Healing Brainwaves, couldn’t be more thrilled!
If you’ve experienced brain trauma, consider signing up for our Santa Cruz HBOT program—details in our bio.
It's never too late to improve brain health 🧠
Healing Brainwaves Foundation’s mission is to help individuals heal from brain injuries and reclaim full, thriving lives.
Our three programs aim to accomplish just that.
1) TREATMENT CONCIERGE program: As a Healing Brainwaves recipient, you receive a personalized case review, education on supportive lifestyle changes, referrals to appropriate medical professionals and treatment options, and ongoing guidance informed by emerging brain health research—so you’re supported throughout your healing journey and never navigating it alone.
2) HBOT program: Our HBOT program offers access to hyperbaric oxygen therapy in a pressurized chamber, providing individuals at risk for or recovering from brain injury with an option for tailored sessions aimed at supporting their overall brain wellness and recovery journey.
3) Education & Outreach: Speaking engagements designed to educate vulnerable populations on brain health, including proactive steps during preseason training, guidance before a potential head impact, and appropriate actions to follow after a brain injury
Healing Brainwaves had the honor of participating at the annual Mavericks Safety summit where local organizations came together to educate and train the community of big wave surfers.
Thank you @mavericksrescue to having us and recognizing the importance of brain health!
It’s imperative for athletes to understand their vulnerability to brain injuries and CTE, how to prepare their brains for a potential hit and steps to take after one is acquired. We did our best to impart our knowledge onto the surfers. After our talk we had several surfers sign up for our recipient program and we have been able to get them proper help.

Surfers used to stay silent about injury.
Now, they’re finally opening up.
🧠 Knockouts. Brain bleeds. Concussions. Air embolisms.
Even the most experienced surfers are one bad wave away from serious damage.
So why don’t we talk about it more?
