In May 2012, while on house arrest at his grandmother’s house in Chicago, where he had been convicted on a string of legal charges, a young Chief Keef recorded his verse for the official remix of “I Don’t Like.” According to producer Na’el Shehade, hired by GOOD Music, Kanye West’s label, to produce the remix, Keef wrote and recorded his verse in just 3 minutes. The video of the session became iconic, considered by many as one of the founding moments of American drill.

Molly Santana had a moment this week that most underground artists only imagine. one feature on Drake’s ICEMAN and her Spotify monthly listeners jumped to 7.3 million overnight. just one placement on the right project at the right time. that’s how exposure works at that level. Drake’s audience doesn’t trickle, it floods. and for an artist who has been building quietly, that kind of reach in a single night changes the trajectory completely. what makes it more interesting is that Molly isn’t a new artist trying to figure out her sound. the identity was already there. the feature just introduced it to a room that had no idea she existed. 7.3 million people now know her name. what she does with that is the actual story.

behind the scenes of virgil abloh’s first louis vuitton show, photographed by cam hicks in 2018, when virgil abloh became the artistic director of louis vuitton, photographer cam hicks sent virgil a message telling him he wanted to work with him virgil replied: “come to paris and i’ll leave the door open,” and hicks immediately bought the first flight from new york to paris. the self-taught photographer then went on to document virgil’s reign at the fashion house. cam describes the photography as proof that virgil held the door open for another young black creative, and proof that there was a legendary black designer at lv. he has now shared the photos he took during this iconic era in a new book release titled “proof.”

Bob Odenkirk purchased this “Burplefolk” painting from an Instagram artist for $67,000 Artist Max Evasion originally put the piece up for a 30-minute live auction on eBay, starting the bidding at just $0.67. The auction was won with a highest bid of $6,700. Max planned to personally deliver the painting to the winner in New York. But before the delivery could take place, actor Bob Odenkirk messaged Max inquiring about the piece. In the end, the original sale was called off and the “Burplefolk” painting was ultimately sold to Bob, best known for his role as Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.

before he became jpegmafia, barrington hendricks enlisted in the u.s. air force at 18, looking for a way out and a fresh start while stationed across japan, iraq, and germany, he started teaching himself how to produce, figuring it out piece by piece in between deployments. during that time, he was releasing music as devon hendryx, recording out of barracks and small apartments, shaping his sound early his time in the military eventually came to an end after clashing with the structure and speaking out, but by then he had already found his voice through the music.

The friendship between PinkPantheress and Steve Lacy is a relatively recent but culturally significant connection that reflects a broader shift in how young artists collaborate and relate within modern music scenes. Both artists emerged from internet-driven ecosystems rather than traditional industry pipelines. PinkPantheress built her early following through short-form platforms, where her nostalgic, UK garage influenced sound quickly resonated with Gen Z listeners. Steve Lacy, on the other hand, first gained recognition as a member of The Internet before becoming a solo artist known for his genre-blending approach to R&B, funk, and indie rock. Despite their different starting points, they share a similar ethos: informal creativity, digital fluency, and a resistance to rigid genre labels. Their connection became more visible around 2022–2023, when both were rising simultaneously in alternative pop and R&B spaces. Interviews and social media interactions highlighted a mutual respect. PinkPantheress has referenced Lacy as someone whose work she admires, particularly his ability to maintain artistic individuality while achieving mainstream success. Lacy, in turn, has shown support for emerging artists in her lane, often engaging with the same online communities that helped elevate her.

Ye never treated the studio like a workplace, it was a laboratory. the difference matters. most artists go to the studio. Kanye West lived there. the way a basketball player treats the gym, not as a place to perform but as a place to exist. at some point the craft stops feeling like work and starts feeling like the only place that makes sense. that’s when the obsession becomes invisible to the person inside it. during the making of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, he claimed over 5,000 man-hours went into Power alone. and that track marked something else too — it was one of the first times he moved away from freestyling directly in the booth and started writing lyrics down properly. a small shift that said a lot about where his head was. what separated him wasn’t talent or budget. it was the refusal to approach music casually. while most artists “go studio,” Kanye built entire worlds around a single idea and stayed until it was right. however long that took. anyone who has genuinely loved something understands the feeling. from the outside it looks like obsession. from the inside it just feels like home.
