SAALHOF 1123 originates from a former monastic country house and farm named Saalhof in Alsace, France, with a history reaching back to the year 1123. 900 years later- in autumn 2023- SAALHOF 1123 was initiated with a series of displays by artists, designers and historical furniture along concerts and performances at the house and around the gardens and fields. SAALHOF 1123 also maintains a boutique and exhibition space in nearby Basel, Switzerland, located in a medieval townhouse in the historical city centre. The store spanning over several floors of the building is a common initiative with Zurich family-run company @ensoie , staging an exclusive range of artistically crafted products that stand for careful craftsmanship and timeless design. In thematic stagings both in the country and at the town house, SAALHOF 1123 presents a carefully selected portfolio of international designers, artists, brands and producers, bringing together traditional handicrafts with contemporary art and design, or folklore with fashion, books and music. Emphasizing on contemporary interpretations of traditional and hand- made produce, historical archives and the almost- forgotten, SAALHOF 1123 is inspired by the forms, materials and ornamentation of rural culture and artisanry, by architecture and by nature. Additionally, SAALHOF 1123 produces functional objects in close collaboration with artists, designers and publishers that may range from functional furniture to interior objects and clothing or from musical, to literary and spiritual practices as well as handmade products from our farm. By proposing spaces for reflection, production, exhibition and distribution, SAALHOF 1123 addresses notions on how we want to live, work and consume today- in artistic and economical structures, in nature and urban settings, as individuals and in communities. The Velazquez table by Herzog & de Meuron for Marta Sala Éditions turns a simple idea into sculptural ingenuity. Designed for the cigar lounge at Hotel Les Trois Rois in Basel, it solves height adjustment without mechanisms: a zigzag-cut base that, when slightly rotated and reassembled, raises the table as its interlocking spikes shift position. Crafted from solid Canaletto walnut or ash, each piece is seasoned and dried twice, shaped with five-axis CNC, then planed, sanded, glued, clamped, and hand-finished over 40+ hours. The result is a precise, tactile object where function defines form, its interlocking parts subtly echoing crowns. ‘Droite et Gauche’ Stool by H&dM Objects, unveiled at MATTER and SHAPE in Paris, reinterprets the Hong Kong Stool as a limited-edition piece that bridges traditional joinery and contemporary design through a compact, reconfigurable form. Crafted in walnut and ash, the stool uses dry-jointing with a single wooden spike to hold all elements together.
