The Voice. An Icon. A Legend. Today, the HBCU sports community honors the incredible legacy of Charlie Neal — a true pioneer whose impact on the culture and the game will never be forgotten.
Thank you, Charlie, for always being a class act and for leaving a legacy that will live on forever🕊️
From Miss DSU to Mistress Of Ceremonies! 👑🎤
Award-winning journalist and entertainer, Jamila Mustafa, will make history as the youngest graduate to serve as Mistress of Ceremonies for the DSU Scholarship Ball!
This year will be nothing short of an extravaganza! As visionary leader, President Tony Allen has already ushered in DSU's largest student body ever, secured top rankings amongst HBCUs and more.
Joining Jamila this evening will be Grammy Award Winner Avery*Sunshine and DSU Head Football Coach DeSean Jackson. The night will celebrate excellence and invest in the future of DSU. 💙❤️
Charlie Neal wasn’t just a broadcaster; he was the bridge that brought the excellence, culture, and history of HBCUs into living rooms across the country.
Today, we honor the final football game Charlie ever called: Texas Southern vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (November 23, 2024).
Alongside his friend and mentee, Steve Wyche, Charlie sat behind the mic one last time for HBCU GO to do what he did best—give dignity, context, and a legendary voice to the schools that mean so much to us. Health concerns sidelined him for the 2025 season; that final “regular season finale” stands as a beautiful closing chapter to a career that spanned nearly half a century.

Charlie Neal set the standard for so many of us. I am honored to call him a friend. One of the true highlights of my career was calling this Texas Southern vs Arkansas-Pine Bluff game with him for HBCUGo TV. To know how important it was to him to uplift HBCU history and legacy led so many of us to follow in his footsteps. Rest easy now brother. 💔🙏🏾

First, I thank God for allowing me to see this vision and make it reality. Through every trial, setback, prayer, and moment of adversity, You never stopped believing in me even when I doubted myself. Thank You for protecting my dreams, covering me, and carrying me this far. To my Lord and Savior, we’re just getting started 🙏🏽
As I reflect on my reign, I can truly say it made me a better man, brother, and son. I learned that being a King is not about being seen, but about seeing others. True leadership is service, pouring into people so they can realize their own potential. It is about knowing that you don’t always have to be the first one to speak, but the first one to understand. I’ve learned the power of patience, discernment, character, integrity, and emotional intelligence. Failure taught me growth, teamwork taught me collaboration, and faith taught me purpose. Walk boldly in who you are and whose you are. Your presence, confidence, and character will speak long before you do.
Lastly, I want to thank my Queen, the 37th Jackpot Royal Court of CAU, our advisors, and the entire student body for your love, support, and belief in me throughout this journey. Thank you for allowing me to serve, lead, and leave my mark on this campus. This experience and the people connected to it will forever hold a special place in my heart.
