Joel Isaac Black or Mister Hazy Pockets (as his faithful converts know him) is first and foremost a soul-man. He’s up to get down. He is a psychic selector and dance music deejay of wide renown, an electric presence, an old-soul music preacher inviting you to the kingdom of heaven in the kick drum. He is a grinning cowboy, sometimes a wizard, but perhaps most importantly, a gentleman with a deadly instinct for turning a party on its head and putting pep in the step of the stiffest statues in the room. — Hazy Pockets means select cuts of sublime acid-
funk-liquid-disco-boogie, robo-sleaze, icy-hot body-beat, blissful Balearic mechanics, a glorious romp delivered with subtle winks and deliberate bounce...with an altogether human funkiness shaking it all loose.
A preternatural ability to read a room is the craft. Drawing upon a decade of crate-digging and curating a world-renowned vinyl store in Los Angeles (Amoeba Records) and decades as a professional touring drummer, studio musician, and producer in all manner of live acts has lent Joel an ear and gut that makes for a steady hand on the throttle, steering the locomotive bass. For 20+ years behind the decks, Hazy Pockets has been teasing out pan-cultural digger wisdom with a learned sensitivity: He is a tireless worker dedicated to his craft: Your enjoyment. So it’s pure release. It is solidarity dance-music, it’s oh-my-god-we-work-so-hard-we’re-gonna-have-a-good-time-tonight music!
Joel was born in Texas to a blues musician father, harmonica and swamp guitar his lullabies. Already a veteran live musician as a teen, he moved out west to L.A, working first as a rock ’n’ roll drummer, and later a studio owner and producer, Joel continued to chase that certain guttural, soulful sound he was introduced to at an early age.
