Thoughts on silicon No life without slime, no electronic devices without wafer. Ultra-pure silicon wafer are the basis for almost all semiconductor components and thus essential building blocks of the global electronics industry. Wherever semiconductor technology is used today, silicon (Si) plays a crucial role. Si is a metalloid that possesses a gray-black color and has a typical metallic, often bronze to bluish shine. It is the second most abundant chemical element on Earth, after oxygen. The process of the silicate cycle takes place over several million years. Si-containing rocks were already used as tools during the Stone Age due to their sharp cutting edges. Elemental Si is non-toxic to the human body, and bound in silicate form, it is important for human health. The human body contains about 20 mg/kg body weight of Si, and this amount decreases with age. Silica is believed to strengthen and maintain healthy skin, nails, bones, and connective tissue. Si monocrystals up to two meters in size are produced using the Czochralski process (crucible pulling) by seeding molten Si with a small Si crystal. These crystals possess a perfect lattice structure. Wafer are then produced by slicing these pulled single crystal bars, which can have a diameter of up to 300 mm, into slices of about 0.5 mm thickness, and subsequently treated to achieve the necessary surface accuracy of a few nanometers in cleanrooms by polishing and etching.
