IT’S A THURSDAY TAKEOVER! Surprise, surprise! It’s the poet Jeremy Dixon here! In the run up to the publication of THE BEAT THE PULSE THE WAVE on 4 June for the next eight Thursdays I’m taking over the Arachne Press Instagram account! I’ll be giving some poetic insights into the creation of my second poetry collection. This week it’s the cover design process. Please drop any questions in the comments. Hugest of thanks to THE MUSE at @poetrybooksociety for recommending THE BEAT THE PULSE THE WAVE as one of their choices for Mental Health Awareness Week. It means such a lot to me that my poetry is seen as a way to improve mental health and wellbeing! You can order my book from the link in the bio. #TheBeatThePulseTheWave #poetry #poetrycommunity #mentalhealthawarenessweek #wellbeing

Jeremy Dixon’s “drag queens at the Albert Dock” takes phrases that pretend to be harmless and lets them accumulate until their violence becomes unmistakable. Each remark alters how a queer body moves, speaks, dresses, mourns, and survives. What I love about this poem is its apparent simplicity. The structure is plain, almost blunt, but the split in “every body” carries so much pressure. This is not “everybody” as a vague social mass. It is every body as flesh. Every body as risk. Every body as the place where politics happens before it becomes language, which feels particularly pertinent right now. The poem understands how casual comments become training. You don’t look gay. You don’t sound gay. You don’t act gay. Each one asks for a small disappearance. Lower the voice. Change the clothes. Hide the badge. Let go of the hand. Laugh it off. Keep yourself moving. And then, quietly, the poem refuses the premise. It doesn’t argue for a better version of “typical.” It shows the cost of having to survive other people’s categories at all. By the final couplet, “living” and “political” are not slogans. They are bodily facts. Survival is not abstract but becomes the work of staying visible without being destroyed by that very visibility. This poem is available in Issue One of The Aftershock Review
