SABAR (2025) — PART 2 What made this video truly special were the people behind it. @santanaroach is genuinely one of the most resilient performers I’ve worked with. Shot after shot underwater!!! physically exhausting setups, barely any breaks because we were racing against time — and somehow she kept delivering every single take. Truly a one-take artist. Little Zahra had never acted before, but once the crew made her feel comfortable, what came through on camera felt honest and real. A brilliant performance! @yash_inamdar and I kept evolving the visual language even during the shoot itself — experimenting with aspect ratios, compositions, and how the water would visually evolve through the film to reflect the protagonist’s state of mind. (And yes, I definitely tortured the colorist (@tapasviasija_colourist ) with very specific thoughts about the psychology of water colours 🤪) Huge love to @shivam_borkar for being an absolute lifesaver on the day, @mg_aqx and team for helping us execute the underwater setups, @pmr1114 for helping take the visuals out of my head and creatively assist me, along with @nisheeta_ for constantly troubleshooting while protecting the creative integrity of the film, and @kamakshikhannamusic & @natashamahtani — who despite being the artist, and artist team — were fully part of the crew helping everywhere they could. @mukulmajawadia my forever producer and support system!!! @missingsheep for some bangin typography @apoorv_kohli my editor who I have spent hours re negotiating how much cross dissolve is too much cross dissolve 😵 That’s honestly my favourite part about independent filmmaking. Everyone carries a piece of the vision. Everyone shows up for each other. I never want to make music videos that feel obvious or safe. I think visuals should either complement the emotion of a song honestly, or completely challenge your interpretation of it. SABAR (2025) — PART 1 When I first heard the song, it immediately reminded me of a photo series I had made years ago around imposter syndrome. That feeling of constantly questioning yourself, yet somehow continuing. SABAR felt like an echo of that emotion. I knew very early on that I didn’t want to make a generic “artist struggling” music video. I wanted the visuals to feel like the emotional state of the song. Water became the metaphor. The swimmer became the artist. The laps became the process. The exhaustion, repetition, isolation, discipline, self-doubt… all of it mirrored the emotional experience of creating. This music video is almost 80% underwater. We had a crew of around 12 people and only 9 hours to shoot the entire thing. On paper, it honestly sounded a little insane 😭 The challenge I loved was to show depth and perspective in an interesting way inside a pool which otherwise could look like a void Finding the right pool, the right underwater team, the right cast, and even the right weather window during monsoon season became part of the process. Every decision had to be carefully justified because that’s the reality of independent filmmaking — you dream big, and then figure out how to make it happen with the resources you have.
