South Tyrol, May 2026
A good 29 hours with the German foreign minister Johann Wadephul in New York at the United Nations. A trip that was designed to strengthen the UN’s ever so often difficult role in today‘s world of crisis, wars and hateful rhetoric – the war in Iran present in every conversation; and a trip to strengthen Germany‘s role within the UN. Germany is competing for a non-permanent seat at the Security Council, a vote that is far from secured.
And no matter how little time you spend in this city, it never fails to charm you.

Gerade in einem restlos ausverkauften Uni-Hörsaal merkt man, wie sehr uns die USA trotz aller transatlantischen Krisendiagnosen weiterhin umtreiben! Die internationale Korrespondentin der „Zeit“, erfolgreiche Podcasterin und vor allem langjährige USA-Beobachterin, Rieke Havertz, stellte im Gespräch mit René aus unserem Programm ihren Sachbuch-Superhit „Goodbye, Amerika?“ in Freiburg vor.
Wir starteten sehr nostalgisch im leicht verkaterten College-Life der 2000er in Ohio, wo Havertz ihre Leidenschaft für das Land erstmals entdeckte, und landeten am Schluss mitten in der kühl kalkulierten Analyse dessen, was uns bei der Präsidentschaftswahl 2028 blühen könnte. Havertz traf als Journalistin das politische Spitzenpersonal der USA, aber kennt sich auch mit den ‚einfachen Leuten‘ gut aus.
Was hängen bleibt? Dass Havertz‘ „Goodbye“ im Buchtitel erstmal eine Einladung zum genaueren Hinsehen und noch kein endgültiger Abschied ist. Ein Buch (und ein Abend), der sich weigert(e), die Widersprüche Amerikas glattzubügeln. Kein Smalltalk, sondern ein echter, manchmal unbequemer Austausch über eine Nation, die uns seit Jahrzehnten gleichermaßen fasziniert wie auch überfordert.
Ein Highlight, das uns zeigt, dass die besten Gespräche dort entstehen, wo die Gewissheiten aufhören! ✨🎙️

Recap „Goodbye, Amerika?“, February 2026: Six places, the last one my old school (where I still take the short cut on the very short walk from my parent‘s house, crossing the street and ignoring the light a few steps to the right; being almost always late in Highschool…). More than 1.100 people came, listened to stories about Ohio, discussed the at times dire state of the US (and the world), appreciated journalism & books & debates and made my often frantic days infinitely better.
