Japan is crazy about hiking, but there are many, many trails they seem to have forgotten: "yamagoe" ridge roads that used to connect valley towns, terraced rice fields that were turned into cedar plantations and then abandoned, Shinto shrines lost in the forest like in a Ghibli film. The place is magic 🌟
I brought my trusty wheels (inherited from @smotey years ago--thanks!) to get around rural Japan. Turns out Japan has epic road cycling! Most of the country is mountains, and post-war Japan went nuts covering them with roads that no one uses anymore.
Japan's the first country to have population decline and subsequent rural abandonment and decay. Turns out it's an improvement! We were all in such a rush to embrace 20th century technology that we lost our sense of aesthetic. Nature reclaiming our folly feels oddly beautiful.
To avoid air travel, I took the boat to Normandy. Turns out it's gorgeous, delicious, and surprisingly friendly. You can also take an onward boat to Dublin, Ireland, which is exactly what I did. Recommended.
