The box on the left is a recent pick up. First edition, 3rd print — only 2,000 made. I recently posted the box on the right, 2nd print, 1,000 made. All of the early wood grains put together by hand, labels affixed by D & D creator Gyax and cohorts.
There’s little subtleties to the 3rd print; often the affixed label was larger than the second print and ran almost the entire length of the box. (If u care, check it out)

A lunatic collector will always follow his passion. This is a super clean 1977 1st edition D and D boxset, 6th printing (the 2002 stamp on the front is the box number, not the year)
You can pick these up at a somewhat reasonable price and they only ran them in the low thousands - rare by any measure.
Magic The Gathering has a direct and traceable tie to D & D, which obviously came later. Look it up. Both Richard Garfield who created Magic in 1993 and Gary Gyax who launched D & D in 1974 grew out of the same tabletop gaming culture and both played RPGs religiously. You can dig deeper yourself and compare the details of the two properties.
As a collector who does it for both passion and transaction, I love a great deal. Often the best deals are found when the GRAIL RUNS FROM THE PACK. In this case the 1954 Godzilla first movie item could be a million dollar book in the highest grade. A BGS 3.5 just sold for over $81,000 at Heritage Auctions. So we went hunting. Hatchpuppet and I went hunting with our friends at Nostalgix. We found the 2nd movie Godzilla at absolute top pop BGS 9.0 for $15,000. That hits my 10X in 10 year criteria, and is a fraction of a low (even lowest grade) first appearance. The hunt for solid opportunities in collecting are often found in your 2nd best item or option.
