I stayed off social media for the most part yesterday because my heart was heavy with all of the “what ifs.” What if our girls didn’t die? What if I was super pregnant right now carrying our little boy we lost on Halloween? Those thoughts never leave you. IVF is never a guarantee, and while we feel incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to growing our family through a Surrogate, it will never replace the babies we carry in our hearts in heaven. One of the hardest parts of days like yesterday is seeing posts or comments minimizing what brings comfort to people grieving saying being a chicken, cat, dog, horse etc mom or loving animals so deeply somehow doesn’t count unless you’ve given birth to a child. Which can be painful and dismissive to so many as well. What people may not understand is that our animals have witnessed some of our darkest moments. They’ve been beside us through the ugliest of cries, screams and silence. The type that we often hide from the world. I was raised you didn’t cry in front of anyone that didn’t sit at your dinner table. Animals don’t ask questions or pass judgment. They simply stay. Sometimes comfort looks like a gentle nudge, a lick to remove tears falling or the weight of a head resting on your shoulder when there are no words left to be said. No, animals may not be considered “children” by everyone’s definition, but they can help carry us through unimaginable loss and loneliness. Sometimes being the only reason you get out of bed at all that day. To anyone who felt hurt, discouraged, or defeated yesterday in the waiting, the loss, or the uncertainty … I see you, and I feel that pain right there with you. Please don’t give up hope.
