A student-built monitoring tower known as US-BFS is helping answer some of Southern California’s most pressing climate questions, while also contributing data to a global network of environmental research sites. Located at Robert J. Bernard Field Station just north of HMC's campus, US-BFS continuously tracks the daily exchange of carbon dioxide, water vapor and energy between the surrounding native coastal sage scrub ecosystem and LA's atmosphere offering rare, year-round insights into how a drought-adapted, urban ecosystem "breathes" across seasons. Last March, students from across the Claremont Colleges gathered at the @pitzercollege basketball courts to watch the third annual Dean Chris Classic (DCC). The DCC featured a 16-team, single-elimination basketball tournament alongside fan events like a dunk contest and a beach volleyball tournament. The DCC drew inspiration from the physical education course “Dean Chris’s Thursday Night Basketball,” which was started nearly 25 years ago at Harvey Mudd by Chris Sundberg, HMC associate dean of students and campus life director.
