Last Tuesday, on May 5th THRA and VOCAL-TX Staff spoke truth to elected power at city hall concerning the Agenda Item #: B2 in the work session presented as the Briefing regarding operational modifications within Homeless Strategies and Operations. The plan as outlined, states that a calculated increase in HSO city funded sweeps of unhoused individuals begins today, May 11th. We are under the awareness that State DPS forces are engaging in separate police lead sweeps already within the city’s jurisdiction. HSO sweeps will be also be accompanied by APD despite there being little to no capacity and bandwidth in their staffing to support daily sweeps as outlined by HSO. Listen in and learn from our THRA staff on specifically how these HSO practices will only increase the burden on city services, provide a limited, incomplete solutions for residents calling HSO about unhoused individuals.

NEW: 30+ Austin service providers and civil rights organizations - alongside 120+ health care workers, service providers, labor and faith leaders - sent a letter to Mayor Watson and Austin City Council members calling for a pause to the City’s plan to dramatically expand APD-led encampment sweeps. Today we're testifying at City Hall against the sweeps expansion plan and hosting a press conference to call for pausing the plan and invest in what people actually need. Read the full sign-on letter at the link in our bio.

Today we held a press conference responding to the March 31st camp sweep led by APD on East Cesar Chavez. The City calls this “compassion.” But what we saw was APD and Austin Resource Recovery throwing away people’s belongings while many waited for food across the street. One person was arrested. No one was offered services, shelter or help of any kind. Unhoused Austinites and advocates are demanding real support and services - not sweeps, tickets, and arrests!

At THRA, we are working to support our unhoused neighbors who have been losing their personal belongings. If you're doing some spring cleaning or organizing a community drive, we would appreciate your help in replacing these essential items for our friends who are seeking crucial services. Please find the link in our bio for more information on how you can help. Anything is appreciated, even sharing this with your network. Thank you!
