‘Books without words’ - This work explores the idea that typography can function as a standalone entity. The type itself carries meaning, reflecting how words shift and overlap when reading with dyslexia.
This book draws from my early experiences with dyslexia, using scans of old school books marked with spelling corrections and teacher annotations. Printed on layered tracing paper and bound with Japanese stitching, this book visually reflects the confusion and complexity of dyslexic reading and writing.

I was diagnosed with dyslexia in my final year of university, and since then I’ve been exploring how type and motion can communicate the realities of living with it. Dyslexia is often misunderstood and oversimplified, so I wanted to create a tool that helps people without the condition experience what reading can feel like.
The project combines three typefaces that capture the frustrations of reading with dyslexia and a series of motion graphics inspired directly by my research and conversations with others. Together, they act as a simulation of the challenges many of us face daily.
As Dyslexia Awareness Month begins, I wanted to share this work to encourage a deeper understanding of dyslexia. It’s often thought of as just spelling or reading difficulties, but it can also affect spoken language. For me, that means delayed speech, difficulty finding words, mispronunciations, and poor word recall. All things I never realised were part of the condition until my diagnosis.

I’m deeply grateful for the incredible opportunity to participate my first fireside chat, thanks to Alice Beecroft and Yahoo. During the session, titled Decoding Dyslexia, we shared our personal experiences with dyslexia, explored coping strategies, and discussed my recent university project.
A heartfelt thank you to Alice and Fleur Bennett for creating such a comfortable space for me to share my journey with dyslexia. The whole experience was extremely rewarding and something I will be ever grateful for!
Conversations like these are so important—they drive awareness, foster understanding, and inspire meaningful change.
These are a selection of images I took when replacing the bus stop advertisements with my large scale posters. Bus stops provide opportunities for interactive engagement with my work, allowing a deeper connection and understanding of the message and its purpose. I decided to exhibit my work in a public setting with the goal of fostering greater understanding and empathy towards dyslexia.

I decided to exhibit my work in a public setting with the goal of fostering greater understanding and empathy towards dyslexia. Manipulating the text “This is how I read with dyslexia” is a simple yet effective way of recreating the frustrations of reading with the disorder. It directly simulates the experience of visual distortion and difficulty in deciphering letters and words.

This thesis explores how changing technology and social context have affected typographic design and perceptions of legibility. Legibility is an element of design that is constantly changing, what was once considered legible is completely different today. These developments in both the perception of legibility and its importance in relation to aesthetics are a result of continual interaction between changing technologies within the design field and the social context in which design is presented.
This publication was written and designed alongside my project which is titled ‘Help others understand dyslexia’. Due to the personal nature of my project I decided to design this publication in the same way. I struggle to read text that is not designed in a simplistic way, without distractions. This was the main driving force behind the design.

This typeface aims to recreate the frustration of reading with dyslexia as the lettersforms appear to bend and move. The wavy nature of the typeface also aims to introduce visual instability, making it harder for the reader to maintain a steady visual focus on the text.

This work develops the emerging idea that typography can function as a stand alone entity. The notion of ‘type as image’ is something that runs consistently throughout my working practice, typography that functions within aesthetic, emotive and conceptual contexts. These books aim to reference the struggle I experience, as someone with dyslexia, as I read. Words move around the page, often overlapping each other making comprehension very difficult.
