This is one of the latest paintings of my show at the Kunsthalle in Darmstadt. It’s titled „Crimson“ and is 180x220cm. It is not only an investigation into red and how I can depict light and shadow through different tones without using black, but also brings together contrasting forms. The outburst in colour is reflected in the contrast of forms. Architectural blue and rigid forms contrast with the more organic, rounded shapes on the right.

„Colour Study lll“, 2025, 30x40cm.
Although most of the rooms in the Kunsthalle are 4m high or more, there are two small Kabinett rooms with a ceiling height of just over 2,2m. It was the perfect place for this painting. Intimate but powerful.

My painting „Chromatic“ currently on view @kunsthalledarmstadt
It measures 2x5m and is my largest painting up to date. It plays with the idea of gradients. One in the colour spectrum changing the palette of the painting from the left to the right side. The other are the gradients within the forms. It was one of the last works I painted for the exhibition and marks a point of departure for me. In the last slide you see working on the painting, preparing it for the pouring.

Happy to share photos from my recent show. Mediterranea is on View @kunsthalledarmstadt until the 15th of March. One month to go!
In the photos, you see the museum's main room, with a beautiful daylight hall. In this 250 sq m hall, I installed a series of paintings directly linked to Darmstadt's cultural heritage. Art nouveau from the Mathildenhöhe. Furthermore, you are also seeing the latest work, a 2x5m dyptich.
After this, you see the so-called „Gartensäle“(Garden rooms). Here I installed 6 paintings from various years and shows that I had.
At last, you see the Kabinett rooms. In contrast to the other spaces those are low in their ceiling height. Here, it was time to shine, for the tiniest paintings I have made so far. Go and see this exhibition and buy a catalogue available at the museum, there are not many left.
Darmstadt, we crushed it! What an opening. Thanks to everyone who came. Best visited opening in the Kunsthalle. That was just day one. Thank you for having me! This is one step of my painting process where I remove separations that I pour acrylic colour into. Once the wires are removed the colour melts together and forms an even surface. The pouring is a part that I enjoy a lot. It brings a lot of fun, and is a very creative moment that allows for error and experiment.

Am 31.01.26 eröffnen wir die Ausstellung 𝘔𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘢 von Harm Gerdes. Die Werke des in Darmstadt arbeitenden Künstlers umfassen über 20 großformatige Leinwände, entstanden seit 2021, und zeigen seine eigenständige Acryl-Gießtechnik.
