The Harlem State Office Building. The telephone building on Lenox. These aren’t just addresses. They are the architecture of civic power. Harlem built institutions that outlasted every attempt to erase them. That’s the culture. This is what it looks like. #HarlemWeek #HarlemCulture #ThisIsHarlem

In 1974, Harlem was being written off. Urban flight had hollowed out one of the most powerful communities in the world. Percy Sutton refused to accept that story. What started as one day became a movement. HARLEM WEEK was never just a festival — it was a declaration that Harlem belonged to Harlem. A declaration that our voice mattered and we could unify to have it heard. 52 years later, we’re still here. #HarlemWeek #LivingArchive #Harlemroots

The lasting impact of a life devoted to community. For more than five decades, Lloyd Williams helped shape HARLEM WEEK into a celebration of Harlem’s culture, community, and economic vitality. As Lloyd once reflected on the journey: “I’m excited about Harlem’s evolution, and how far the neighborhood has come since the economically depressed 1970s when we started HARLEM WEEK with the first HARLEM DAY. The late great actor and producer Ossie Davis proclaimed that HARLEM DAY was the beginning of ‘The Second Harlem Renaissance.’ I’m proud to say that for 50 years HARLEM WEEK has continually uplifted the spirits of uptown residents, supported the growth of small businesses, residential and commercial construction, and encouraged the expansion of higher education institutions and medical facilities. Importantly, HARLEM WEEK has been responsible for many improvements in infrastructure, transportation, and other areas that have directly benefitted Harlemites, and neighborhood visitors.” This will be our first HARLEM WEEK without Lloyd Williams, but there will never be a HARLEM WEEK without his legacy. #HARLEMWEEK #HarlemNYC #Harlemlegend

What began in 1974 as a single gathering called Harlem Day was created to bring positive energy back to a neighborhood facing economic hardship. Organized by community leaders, businesses, and cultural institutions, the event quickly became a powerful reminder of Harlem’s strength, creativity, and pride. Over the decades, HARLEM WEEK has grown into one of New York City’s longest-running cultural festivals — bringing together residents, artists, entrepreneurs, educators, and leaders from around the world. From street festivals and performances to youth programs, health initiatives, and business showcases, the celebration reflects the many voices and traditions that shape Harlem. More than fifty years later, the spirit that started Harlem Day continue. Because HARLEM WEEK has always been about more than events. It is about community. Established 1974. #HARLEMWEEK

For more than five decades, HARLEM WEEK has brought together those that call Harlem home, visitors, artists, entrepreneurs, and leaders to celebrate the vibrant spirit and influence of Harlem. What began in 1974 as Harlem Day, a single gathering created to bring positive energy back to the community, has grown into one of New York City’s most enduring cultural festivals. Today, HARLEM WEEK features a wide range of programming that reflects the richness of Harlem and the communities it touches, including: - Live music & cultural performances - Outdoor festivals & neighborhood celebrations - Small business showcases & vendor markets - Health & wellness initiatives - Youth & education programming - Conversations with leaders across business, media, and public life. Each summer, the festival ignites creating spaces where culture, community, and commerce come together across parks, streets, and by partnering with other cultural and legacy institutions. Most importantly, we celebrate all that is Harlem. Watch this space. More information about the upcoming festival will be shared soon. #HARLEMWEEK #HarlemNYC
