Curating as Conditions for Emergence 走 着说
April 5 (Sun), 2:30 PM
Making Space, Guangzhou This Sunday, curator and art historian Eléonore Varone @secantspace will share her long-term curatorial practice, reflecting on site-specific work, buried histories, public space, and how curating can create conditions for forms and positions to take shape. The talk follows her short-term research residency in the Pearl River Delta and will also include a conversation with Cora Yubin Luo @coraluoluo . Eléonore is the founder of Secant Space in Istanbul and has previously worked across Switzerland and internationally, including Bex&Arts 2023, CACY, and other institutions and festivals.
Cora Yubin Luo is an independent curator based in Guangzhou, whose work focuses on individual expressions obscured by dominant histories and social structures. Hosted/curated by Ziyun Wang @zyunzyunw , Chao Wang @hard_work_workshop , and Binghuang Xu @binghuang_yun

Welcoming Eléonore Varone to Making Space From March 26 through the coming two weeks, we are happy to welcome Eléonore Varone for a research residency. Eléonore Varone is a curator and art historian whose practice is deeply attentive to space, context, and site-specific encounters. Since 2024, she has founded Secant Space @secantspace in Istanbul as a curatorial platform and artist residency that prioritizes research, archival work, and long-term artistic development. During her stay, her research will focus on independent and alternative art spaces in the Pearl River Delta. Starting from Making Space, we will travel with her through Guangzhou and nearby areas, visiting artist-run initiatives, small-scale cultural platforms, and self-organised spaces to understand how local art ecologies are built, sustained, and negotiated over time. This residency is supported by Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council @prohelvetia . And hosted by Wang Ziyun @zyunzyunw , Wang Chao @hard_work_workshop ,and Xu Binghuang @binghuang_yun . Photography and Editing: Marina @breathemoment Music: Bahadır Kartal @kahadirbartal Being a Seagull in Istanbul: Wang Chao I’m very happy to share this video made in collaboration with Marina (we have also collaborated on photography in previous exhibition). It reminds me of the sunshine, waves and hot black tea in Istanbul, as well as the passengers on the same ferry, the tourists hurrying at the pier and the citizens sitting casually by the shore. The 30-day residency always passes in the blink of an eye. During the first two weeks of observation, I was certain that seagulls and ferries were the most attractive parts of Istanbul to me. ”Why not try to be a seagull taking a ferry?“ Thanks to Marina for the photography, videography and editing. There were many of Marina‘s suggestions during the process (how about stick around the simit cart?). Marina also added Turkish music by Bahadır Kartal during the editing process, which I really like! During this creative process, thanks to Ziyun for accompanying me to scout locations in advance and determine the basic shooting route. I am also thankful to Eleonore and Secant Space for her great support in organizing the exhibition and facilitating communication. And a big thanks to Duygu Yaman for providing the most authentic introduction to Istanbul!

Designed in Guangzhou, the Seagull Mask was reassembled in Istanbul and first presented in the exhibition’s initial iteration. It did not remain static though, suspended as an object on display. Instead, it became active carried through the city on the artist’s shoulders, drifting between shores. In this performative excursion, the mask encountered Istanbul’s own seagulls: those trailing the vapurs across the Bosphorus, catching fragments of simit mid-air, and eyeing the food of passersby with calculated precision. The object shifted from artifact to participant, moving within the urban ecosystem it evokes. This project is a collaboration between Wang Chao and Marina Vysotskaia. The images were taken on 06.02.2026, between Karaköy and Kadıköy. @hard_work_workshop @breathemoment @zyunzyunw

The second version of Moving Park by Ziyun & Wang Chao opened last Thursday. 🌳 It follows a month of intense work, encounters, and observations for the artists, who now present a new exhibition deeply shaped by their exchanges and by what they observed in the streets. Rushed passersby, workers on break, people for whom the street itself is a workspace. Sounds, smells, and tastes have inspired musical instruments, movements, installations, and even a workshop. At the heart of this attention to the street lies a strong sensitivity to the many human layers that intersect there, translated with a subtle and generous touch of humor. Version 2 of the exhibition is on view until February 28. We are happy to welcome you from Wednesday to Saturday, 14:00–19:00. @zyunzyunw @hard_work_workshop @no.1houseoffinnishpine @duyguyaman___ 📷 @barisozcetin

Moving Park The exhibition unfolds from Guangzhou to Istanbul through the residency of Ziyun and Wang Chao, two artists working between drawing, painting, construction and installation. The exhibition opens through two openings. The second opening, on 12.02, invites the public to discover the point of arrival of the exhibition. Works developed in Istanbul will have been added over time to those brought from China, creating a direct dialogue between two cities that share more than one might expect. 📍 Secant Space Gallery – Akarsu Yokuşu St. No:3, Beyoğlu @zyunzyunw @no.1houseoffinnishpine @hard_work_workshop @duyguyaman___ 📷 @barisozcetin
