This is one of my favourite classical compositions. It is a symbol of how far I’ve come in my musical journey. From fearing my turn to improvise alaaps and frantically trying to make one as my classmate timidly tries one of her own to improving boldly and confidently without batting an eye. Coming up with variations of the same line was another challenge I’ve overcome.
This bandish contains the most variations and alaaps among all the ones I’ve learnt. It is also set in a completely new taal and I’m not being modest when I say beat is not my thing, I genuinely suck at it. But like everyone else, I learnt and became better.
This bandish captures each of these challenges I’ve overcome which is why it’s so special to me. Also a special shout-out to
@chidrupee my partner in crime,
@sangitaray15 the best teacher anyone could ask for, and
@vedaant_1215 , the only percussionist I trust with my life.
