Howdy 🤠 Podcasts have been a cool way for y’all to actually get to know me beyond the cuts, beyond the content. And for the hairstylists, barbers, and creatives tapped in… it’s a window into understanding your value and your worth. I pulled up to Bryan College Station and sat down with Luke at 101. Never met him before this. Just did a little IG scouting and immediately knew this guy’s different. A barber with real scissor work? Yeah… that’ll catch my attention every time. Here’s the thing… if you’re not bringing scissors into your craft, you’re putting a ceiling on yourself. Straight up. The hustle is there, barbers grind like crazy but a lot of that grind stays boxed in. Before I even got to the shop, I passed at least 10 others. And I couldn’t tell you the difference between most of them. That’s the point. If you want to be exceptional, you gotta step outside the box. What Luke’s doing? It’s next level. His skillset is leverage. Real leverage. To the point where one of my goals this year is to take a private class with him. And no there’s no “hook me up” energy. I’ll pay full price. Because value recognizes value. That’s something a lot of people miss. The first 3–5 years in this game? It feels like a job. You’re grinding, figuring it out, chasing the check. It’s not always pretty. But then there’s a shift… where you decide Is this just a job? Or is this my profession? What we do is essential. And yeah, some people will say I charge too much. Or Luke charges too much. And my answer is always the same you’re absolutely right. And I’m not offended. Because not everyone is my client. And that’s the whole point. I don’t need 100 people sitting in my chair. I need 50 who understand the value of what I bring. If you’ve got a minute, tap into the podcast. We all got a story. This is just a glimpse of mine. Some incredibly low production value content for your viewing pleasure… followed by an overly complex explanation🫣 I wrote this, so ai didn’t Seriously though, I just want to encourage you… that once you’ve mastered the rules, it’s time to break them and start making some super fun, broken, shattered, punky, cool haircuts. I think people get so rigid in their understanding of how to do hair that they forget that haircuts are supposed to be a very personal piece of a person’s look. It’s like they’re just giving out Lego haircuts for each person that are all perfectly the same. And I did that for so long. But for the last six years or so, I’ve just been breaking rules, and my clients love it… & so do my students 👀 The clients don’t even know the rules anyway lol. In fact, they genuinely can’t get what I’m giving them anywhere else, because I’m making dozens of imperfections in their haircut that simply couldn’t be replicated by someone else. I mean, surely, if someone watched what I’m doing, they could play it back & do it—but that’s not what I mean. What I’m talking about is creating a perfectly-broken haircut that happens to be within a shape that’s flattering to my client. Like this: create the shape that is suitable for their look, desire, and style… and if they don’t want it to be a perfectly structured haircut, and they’re open to the idea of it being very soft and edgy and spiky—and really not taking a lot of effort to look like an intentionally styled, fun haircut—then I basically just obliterate the internal areas of all those shapes to give those shapes an internal structure/volume, to elevate those shapes while simultaneously minimizing the amount of density at the tips of the hair. ***Simply put: those intentionally inconsistent short bits make all the longer bits stand up. And those longer bits were cut to the appropriate shape, so I know that the hair is never really going to look out of place—because even the longest hairs can’t escape the shape that I designed. So for instance, I didn’t want his crown to lay down nicely. I wanted it to join in with all the other hairs and stand up with little to no hair product.
