Bringing landscape into fiber 🍃 We recently received a timely reminder from HVTP member Hannah Ross @hanoux_ that in April, natural dyers in the Hudson Valley are preparing planting beds and starting seeds so in the months to come, local fiber can be enriched with locally grown dyes – from flowers, leaves, roots and more. Ross is an artist, dye farmer and forager, who has workshops, dyestuffs and home goods available at Hanoux.com. She says, “Ask where you buy your fiber: Who grew the color?” Read the whole story in our next issue of eNews, coming out soon. Our barn studio has alway been living & breathing... a place where soil, plant, and fiber meet. After years of quiet work rejuvenating this historic barn built in 1814, we are finally ready to invite more hands in through our new Co-op Studio Model. We believe that regenerative art shouldn't be a solitary pursuit. We’ve designed this work trade model to foster a community-rooted exchange: trading time, skill, and care for dedicated studio access. We are officially calling all artists working with earth-based and natural materials to apply. Whether you are working with botanical pigments, natural fibers, clay or paper ✨🌿 consider joining our creative ecosystem. This is about making professional, earth-led space more accessible and interconnected. The full details and sign-up link go live on the website tomorrow. 🌿

18 months ago, Aurora arrived, and my world shifted into a new frequency. I've carried the story of her beginning close to my heart, oscillating between the sacredness of silence and the necessity to share. Today, I am finally exhaling those words. I’ve launched Full Spectrum, a Substack dedicated to the stories of becoming and remembering. I chose this name because birth—and womanhood—is rarely a study in black and white. It is the nuanced middle ground where we learn to trust the ancient wisdom of our bodies while gratefully leaning on the safety of modern care. I’m sharing this so that my daughter, and perhaps you, can see that you don’t have to choose a side; you only have to choose your own path. Part I of my birth story is live now. <3 . . . photos by @desdemonadallas - wrapped in hemp dyed with homegrown indigo . . . . .#FullSpectrum #BirthStory #SubstackWriters #MotherhoodUnplugged #HomeBirth #InformedBirth #PostpartumJourney #Matrescence #EmpoweredBirthing #BirthWithoutFear

We visited @watanabes_japan studio in the heart of rural Tokushima, where they craft Sukumo (fermented indigo) from seed to dye vat with only organic ingredients; wood ash, shell lime powder, and wheat bran. Cultivating their indigo through the blessings of nature, the land, and the bonds of our local community to develop a deep, vibrant blue. 🌀💙 We learned so much while dyeing a linen tunic in the vats on a rainy day in the cozy studio where 10 dye baths live & are cared for daily. Surrounded by the earthen smell of alive bacteria and the sound of rain… we discussed the whole process in depth. “ This traditional Japanese dye, is created by spreading dried indigo leaves on a fermentation bed (nebedoko). After moistening and mixing the leaves, the fermentation process begins on an earthen, clay floor covered in hand woven straw mats. Over 100 days, the indigo undergoes an initial resting phase (nesekomi) then more than twelve rounds of turning (kirikaeshi)… the leaves gradually transform into rich, vibrant sukumo. Within the dye vat, a microbial ecosystem thrives, reminiscent of a living galaxy where societies form, villages emerge, and life pulses unseen. This invisible vitality imbues our indigo with its deep, soulful blue. “ . grateful for our farm tour and custom dyeing session @watanabes_japan Very inspired to apply this new knowledge to our farm in the Hudson Valley <3 is anyone actively using this process in the New York State area? Would love to connect. 💙🌀 Tag your favorite Indigo artist 💙🌀✨ . . . #naturaldyeing #naturaldyersofinstagram #indigo #sukumo #japaneseindigo #indigofarming #fermentedindigo #wantanabe #hanoux #customindigo

The land of the rising sun ☀️ we entered a portal while in Japan full of indigo dips, mossy mountains, sacred temples, vintage kimono hunting, Tokyo garment district, train hopping, ramen indulgence and hot mineral water baths in every town. . I've been grounded at home a week & still feel a piece of my soul there. 🇯🇵 . So much beauty and depth to share after 4 weeks traveling with baby Aurora ; Hiroshima > Awaji Island > Tokushima > Kyoto > Kanazawa > Oyabe > Tokyo🌀✨ . Slowly, slowly, my social media tolerance as a new mama is very low, but sometimes the beauty is just bursting at the seams. I am sorting and sifting to share knowledge I learned from creatives along the way. xo H . . . #japanlove #japantravel #hanoux #textileartist #indigodyeing #sumo #japaneseindigo #healingcolor #tokushima #tokyo
