I had the great fortune to work on one of Sondheim’s last musicals, Buñuel. I was determined to be exacting - honoring every note, syllable, phrase, chord. It was a major highlight of my career and will continue to be.
I remember the electricity that shot through my body when I heard the opening whistle of Sweeney Todd for the first time. I had borrowed the cast album from my local library. I had ridden there on my bike. I took the CD (CD!) home and laid down on the sofa, closed my eyes, and listened to the entire show without stopping. That is the magic of Sondheim.
Everyone has their own Sondheim story, their own connection, their own moment. I think that’s the point, right? Sondheim is written into the bedrock of theatre. He is a foundational piece of every person’s journey to love musical theatre, myself included. 🖤 #Sondheim #StephenSondheim
