Have a lot of love for this Platt Lynes photo of George Hansen. This one is a kind of spiritual successor to a different painting of a nude figure in a tree collaged over with knives.
My solo “Flight Spiral” is up at @auxierkline until March 20!! DM the gallery for info :) ❤️🪽🕊️🦅🪶🪿🐓
Wings 16”x20” oil on linen
Included in Flight Spiral at @auxierkline till March 20.
I’ve spent the last two or so years up to my chin in Klee’s Angelus Novus. Many of the paintings in the show include wings (and snippets or tracings of the artwork itself.) Klee’s Angel appears pinned in place and as Benjamin describes, its wings are held open by a strong tempest wind that blows the angel backwards into the future. According to Benjamin, the angel instructs us in how to observe the debris we call history in its moment of transformation from present to flattened past. Bodies, catastrophe, refuse, information of all varieties. Wings hold us steady in this observation, the device that keeps us trapped in ongoing revelation and realization as information accumulates against any order or logic.

Have for a while been in this state of just turning the same idea and images over in my hands again and again. More than anything, the repetition is a good vehicle, for me anyways, to get better at painting and find new solutions or pathways to the same outcome. It’s the thing that I always forget and am constantly reminded of, that you continue to get better at painting if you keep doing it. You push colors around and then what sometimes feels like a cosmic accident that keeps happening, you step back and realize you’ve made a picture. It’s a real treat.
Oklahoma City artist Hank Ehrenfried makes paintings about observation, proximity and the mechanics of history.
In this Hyvemind mini documentary, Ehrenfried discusses his shift from abstraction to figuration, his collage-based process and the way his paintings explore how information reaches us.
Built from found images, secondhand books and layered references, his work reflects the strange, fragmented way we receive images, ideas and meaning in daily life.
Through painting, Ehrenfried studies what is visible, what remains inaccessible and how looking closely can become its own form of understanding.
