The Bay Area has a 6.4 job-to-home ratio - the highest in the country. Between 2012 and 2015, Mountain View gained 17,921 jobs but only 779 units of housing. This is astronomical job growth without the infrastructure to support it, leading to high housing costs across the Bay. Rather than vilify the tech industry, we must encourage tech leaders to resist leaning on NIMBYism, fight outdated policy and zoning laws, and to invest in housing the employees they recruit to our region.#UnderstandDignifyDo

NIMBY or "Not-In-My-Backyard" is a view rooted in the fear that an increase in the supply of housing will lower the value of homes and neighborhood amenities. NIMBY concerns of blocked light, congestion, and noise from housing development have major effects - often making it much harder for affordable housing projects to be built. NIMBYism also leads to the larger questions of what and who have the power in creating a community. #UnderstandDignifyDo

On any given day, 75 to 100 homeless camps exist in San Francisco. Tent encampments are a unique feature of San Francisco's homeless experience, but they're not sustainable or safe. The answer is not to criminalize individuals in encampments, but to move them into supportive housing quickly. #UnderstandDignifyDo

"It’s a fundamental market failure we’re dealing with. We have people working full time or more who can’t afford rent. There’s not enough decent and affordable housing, and we haven’t invested in that to the scale needed. It’s a problem of great enormity, and we have great programs on the margins to alleviate some of the conditions, but at the end of the day, you have to solve the market failure if you’re going to make headway on it." - Tyler Jaeckel, Harvard Kennedy School #UnderstandDignifyDo

Homelessness is structural and intersectional. It is complicated and systemic. But it can be understood and solved. This week, we're highlighting some of the most contentious and confusing aspects of Bay Area homelessness as part of our advocacy project #UnderstandDignifyDo led by @heyrachelb

Our mission is to fight urban poverty, but all too often this mission is seen as "dealing with a crisis" rather than finding actionable solutions. That's why this month we will be launching an advocacy project, led by our collaborator @heyrachelb , to see through the crisis to the heart of homelessness. The #UnderstandDignifyDo series will share important information breaking down the issue, the human stories of homelessness, and positive steps that you can take to make an impact. We're kicking-off the series with an amazing blog post from Rachel, where she outlines the project and shares her path to advocacy. Check out Rachel's blog post!
