Dr. Cheng Tsun-Shing: Entéléchie and the Spiritual Crisis of Europe
Cheng Tsun-sihng begins with Edmund Husserl’s 1935 work The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology to reconsider why Europe, as the birthplace of philosophy, fell into a spiritual crisis amid modernity and the Scientific Revolution.
Once scientific knowledge abandoned its transcendental grounding, fractures also emerged in the relationship between reason, humanity, and truth. At such a historical moment, Europe ceased to be merely a geographical concept and became a spiritual question that must be posed anew.
What constitutes Europe’s singularity? Can it be re-Europeanized through an act of the will? Here, Entéléchie appears as a concept for reactualizing potential and force, pointing toward a renewed formation of the life-world.
Prof. Siegfried Zielinski
Deep Faculties — A Time Machine for Advanced Thinking
As an archaeologist of art and media, Siegfried has long lived inside a kind of time machine. To him, shaping the present of the future means constantly returning to the origins of knowledge and action, rethinking how they emerge, evolve, and branch out, and drawing from them unexpected variations. Past and future are both spaces of possibility, and they meet in the practice of the present, where interventionist thought can become a generator of surprise.
With this conviction, he has developed around twenty faculties over the past two decades. Like Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, many of them may still remain largely fictional; yet they carry the force to challenge established cultural and artistic institutions, and, at their most powerful, to move beyond them.

Prof. Koichiro KOKUBUN
Towards a Communism of Action: Redefining Responsibility through the Middle Voice
Beginning with ancient Greece, Prof. Kokubun revisits the Greek middle voice and asks how responsibility might be rethought beyond the modern idea of individual will. In ancient Greek, the middle voice names a form of action where one is neither simply doing nor simply being done to, but fully involved in the event itself. Moving across philosophy, language, and political thought, he proposes a “communism of action” while probing the limits of logos and the unequal framing of Europe and Asia.
Prof. Pang Laikwan
Darwinism and Life: A European Response and A Chinese Response
Prf. Pang Laikwan examines how Darwinism moved beyond biology into politics, capitalism, and imperial modernity. Through Henri Bergson and Zhang Taiyan, her talk compares European and Chinese responses to evolution, opening up different understandings of time, change, and life under modern pressure.

Prof. Yuk HUI
"Post-Europe and Inter-Asia: For a New Landscape of Thought"
Opening the conference, Prof. Yuk Hui reflects on the meaning of post-Europe and inter-Asia, the double bind of Eurocentrism, and the ways in which Asian thought is being called upon to address the current geopolitical, technological, and historical moment.
Prof. WANG Hui
"A Survivor’s Gift: The 'Jewish Question”' in an East Asian Perspective and Its Global Historical Significance"
Prof. Wang Hui examines the global significance of the Holocaust through an East Asian perspective, beginning with the story of a Jewish musician exiled in China. By comparing Jewish experiences in Shanghai, Harbin, and Europe, he probes the limits of modern human rights discourse and asks why such frameworks continue to fail in the face of ongoing violence and oppression.

Saath-Saath Music is Returning to China!
In June 2025, Saath-Saath returned to China after the pandemic. The plan was to explore the overland Silk Route and its presence in north-western China. The highlight of our visit, supported by the Centre for the Study of Culture and Society, Bangalore, India, was the encounter with the oasis town of Dunhuang.
With the curator, @tejaswini.niranjana , the singers @bindhumalini and @rutuvihar Lad collaborated with master Pipa player Zhang Yi and Uighur musicians Enzer Enwer and Mukaddess to reinterpret the Dunhuang Ancient Notation—a rare musical score from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE).
Drawing from their diverse backgrounds in Indian classical, Uighur muqam, and Chinese traditional music, the artists improvised on the ancient framework. The result was a stunning musical dialogue, echoing the historic cultural exchange of the Silk Road.
Initiated by curator Tejaswini Niranjana in 2016 with the support of West Heavens, the Saath-Saath project will soon launch more research initiatives. Stay tuned!

How can we go on … in the night? For Bernard Stiegler
We are now witnessing the “barbaric implosion” that Bernard predicted—borrowing the phrase from Félix Guattari.
This crisis runs deep, and the night keeps thickening.
We feel his absence more than ever—he, who never ceased to warn us of this peril.
We must resume the questioning—together.
We must return to his interrogations and respond to them in turn: Rückfragen.
And we must do so idiotextually, in the singular manner he taught us.
Let us try, from our scattered horizons, to go and find him again—
by deepening the pharmacology of this crisis, a century after Freud.
The night before, it was a full moon.
Did you see it that night?
The Absolute shall exist outside—moon, beyond time:
and he shall lift the curtains, facing us.
— Stéphane Mallarmé, Igitur
Research exhibition: A Cabinet of Curiosities for the 21st Century
January 05 - March 08, 2025
Step into a modern-day Wunderkammer where art and science collide in unexpected ways. "A Cabinet of Curiosities" reimagines the Renaissance tradition of wonder rooms for the 21st century. Hidden away in a historic Edwardian mansion, this intimate exhibition brings together over 30 international artists and scientists who blur the boundaries between art, mathematics, astrophysics, and molecular biology. From Mars landscapes painted in traditional Chinese ink to cosmic messages captured in Japanese tea ceremonies, each piece tells a story of discovery and wonder. By invitation only, guests will experience guided tours through rooms filled with contemporary artifacts that challenge our understanding of the universe - both inner and outer. Like its historical counterparts, this cabinet emphasizes the poetic and playful in science, reminding us that wonder still exists in our technological age.
The exhibition is curated by Michael Whittle, artist and professor at Macao University.
