Some of you have been here since 2014. Ham Radio 360/FOTime was loud, fun, and full throttle. Then in 2018, it stopped. Most of you know why. Carla got sick. Life got very small, very fast. I never really told the whole story publicly. Not the internal part. But, I just wrote it. Before You Buy Anything isn’t a ham radio book. But if you’ve ever wondered what shifted in me after 2018… it’s in there. And if you’re still here after all these years — thank you. 73 y'all Cale/K4CDN

The Test. This is where most people stop. Not because they can’t pass. Not because it’s unfair. But because testing feels like a wall instead of a doorway. I’ve watched this conversation repeat for years. Same fears. Same hesitation. Different platforms. The test was never the real problem. What comes after it is. This episode isn’t test prep. It isn’t a debate. It’s an explanation of why testing exists, why it still matters, and why getting past it changes the entire conversation. Episode 3 is live on YouTube.

I’m not the guy for everybody and that’s okay. My work is aimed at a specific season of life. Families. Households with real responsibility. People who don’t want another hobby — they want a plan that works. Less about drills and backpacks. More about structure a spouse and kids can actually follow. That’s what these books are for. Clear language. Simple systems. Plans that hold when phones quit and stress goes up. If you enjoy the gear and the craft, we’ll still get along. If you’re leading a family and want calm instead of chaos, this work was built for you.

I just released an episode called “Ham Radio, the Last Act.” I wasn’t trying to make a point. I wasn’t teaching anything. I was talking through why ham radio keeps coming up at the end of the conversation, and why so many people never quite get there. It wasn’t about tests or gear(yet). It was about time. And what people do, or don’t do, with it. Welcome to the last act of the Prep Comms podcast - now playing on YouTube. #hamradio #prepper #GMRS

Pulled my UHF repeater down from the fire department. After a tune-up it'll be headed to a mountaintop where it will actually do some good work. It’s ugly, dusty, home-built & used. And it’s about to be back in service. Coverage matters. Systems matter. And radios don’t help anyone sitting on a shelf.

A walkie talkie with a stock antenna is a lot like my old LX470 with a flat tire. The capability is there… but the performance isn’t. I’ve run radios for decades now — old Icoms, Wouxuns, Kenwoods, and the UV-Pro you see on the right. Different radios, different ages, different features. But they all hit the same ceiling with the factory antenna. Swap the antenna, and the whole radio changes. It hears better. It talks farther. It finally does what you bought it to do. The radio isn’t the problem. The stock antenna is. I run ZBM2 antennas because they unlock performance on everything I own. If you want the same jump, go to zbm2industries.com and use code PREPCOMMS. So, what’s the first antenna upgrade that made a real difference for you?

You’ve heard me say it for years. Antennas make or break a radio. I’ve run a dual-band ham whip on my fire radios for a long time. It worked fantastic (go listen to the tapes). ZERO complaints. But I wanted a dedicated antenna tuned for our local fire service frequencies… and I’ll admit it. I wanted a red one. So I swapped it. As expected-Performance is tight. Reception is clean. And yes — the red looks sharp! If you want the Best replacement antennas on the market, shop at zbm2industries.com and use code PREPCOMMS to save. PS: Tell me I’m not the only one who thinks the red looks slick?

Tomorrow I’m hosting a live Zoom briefing and open Q&A at 1 PM Eastern. We’ll walk through the real gaps storms expose, why families lose contact so fast, and what you can do right now while everything is still calm. This session is practical and direct. Nothing fancy. Just the straight path to building a winter backup communication plan that works under pressure. If this matters to you, register before the call so you get the Zoom link in time: live.prepcomms.com Show up ready. Bring your questions. I’ll give you the one-hour shortcut most families never get.

Most folks stop once they buy the radios. They charge them, test them once, and toss them in a drawer “for later.” (But Not @prepcomms Listeners!) They know that's not how this works. BUT, If your family doesn’t know which button to press, those radios are just paperweights. Turn them on. Label the channels. Key up and make contact. The new Btech GMRS-50 Pro has been solid so far — easy to use, plenty of punch — and paired with the PeliComms ¼-wave base antenna, it flat-out performs. I’m also talking repeaters — how to reach them, why most fail, and how to test yours — plus what the new Prep Comms Network really is: a place for real folks to learn, fix problems, and keep getting better. Full episode’s up now on the Prep Comms Podcast and YouTube. 73 y’all & God Bless. Local ham club set up today for a Parks on the Air event. US2891 We stopped by for a few minutes — and I couldn’t help but grin when I spotted Chris running his QDX QRP rig with a Prep Comms mouse pad :) The club had its full setup with the trailer, an IC-7300 station, and the gang calling CQ. (no pics) I almost felt inclined to take the FT891 to a local park.... almost... Still love seeing local radio alive and well — from HF to handhelds, it’s all about getting out, making contacts, and keeping the airwaves warm. You ever work a POTA activation? Drop your park number or your go-to rig below. #POTA #HamRadio #FieldDayReady #EmergencyComms #PrepComms

Most people think their radio is the problem. It’s not; In most cases, it's the antenna. That little rubber duck on top seems convenient, but it’s about the worst way to move a signal. You can buy another radio, add watts, or chase the latest—but if your antenna can’t effectively get the signal out, none of that matters. Swap it for something built and tuned then maybe get it a few feet higher. You’ll hear the difference right away. I’ve run this test with my fam... All we did was change antennas—and, wow what a difference!
