It grew out of my interest in time and memory, and in how a city slowly becomes part of personal experience. This work took shape during my stay @swatchartpeacehotel , through daily observation of Shanghai.
I chose plane trees because they are inseparable from the city’s streets. Winter is when they feel most honest to me. As their bark peels away, dense and scarred textures emerge, where ageing and renewal coexist. I photographed an entire street of plane trees along Dingxi Road and combined fragments from seven different trees into one continuous form, one tree made from many lives. Numbers written and carved into the innermost bark, left by those who care for the trees, revealed that the trees are quietly recorded and remembered.
Realised through the process of intaglio printmaking, the work takes the form of two long plane trees in copper and paper. The copper tree acts as the matrix, while the burnt and eroded paper tree appears as its print, reflecting how lived experience becomes memory, partial, fragile, and constantly shifting.

‘Transition’ is a project that I explore the nuances of time perception and memory metamorphosis by merging video documentation, etchings, and stop-motion animation.The foundational materials of this work consist of videos and photos that capture ephemeral moments, light in the dark, and captivating transitions within everyday life.

Among all printmaking techniques, I feel the deepest connection with intaglio - a process where memory, touch, and time seem to intertwine.
I work as an intaglio printmaker, using photography as the starting point for my explorations.

Very excited to share that my installation work ‘Peeling’ is now exhibited in Venice！✨
As part of Flora Fantastica, a special exhibition by Swatch @swatchartpeacehotel presented during the Venice Biennale .
The work took shape during my residency at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel, growing from my interest in time and memory. Inspired by plane trees shedding their bark in winter, Peeling reflects aging and renewal existing side by side. Two long trees in copper and paper appear together, one holding the trace, the other carrying it like a fragile, shifting memory. Alongside them, I’m also showing a canvas tree work that explores the tension between heaviness and lightness.
The exhibition is set in the beautiful Royal Gardens of Venice and runs until July 26.

How could I possibly resist a Natgraph tabletop exposure unit like this… ✨
Yesterday I brought this beauty back from Southampton to my studio in Bristol.
Everything is in crazy good condition, basically 90% new! Can’t believe it’s already been working for over ten years. Glass is spotless, no scratches at all, bulb fires beautifully, vacuum is stronggg. Perfect for photopolymer & copper photogravure.
Bonus🤩there’s even a drying cabinet underneath!
The person who sold it to me said he’s retiring, so now the machine is in my hands.
Well then… I’m going to use the hell out of it.😎
Anyone know where to find replacement Natgraph bulbs?

For the best continuous tones in copper photogravure, I use 12gsm silk like gampi for chine-collé. In this video, I show how to align this ultra-thin gampi perfectly with the copper plate. It’s a slow process, but every perfect print feels incredibly rewarding！🤩

Made my own vacuum frame for travelling…🧳
Okay🥸 for exposing photopolymer plates！
I’d been having so many issues with the tabletop exposure unit… uneven exposure from the strip lights, stripe marks showing on the plate, dust getting pulled onto the glass by static, random black spots, and not enough vacuum pressure so light leaked around the edges 😵💫
I don’t have space for a big enclosed exposure unit, so I decided to make a separate vacuum frame instead.
Next step: getting a powerful LED light to hang above it and test it out 🔦

I like using techniques that can replicate reality to create images that are not real.
This print comes from a gelatin tissue I made myself using a non-toxic FAC sensitiser.
