I have designed a series of cutlery now showing as part of Table Manners exhibition for Melbourne design week. 14–17 May at Florian Home. 617 Rathdowne Street. I began designing this series with the question of how far we are willing to accept new ways of getting food from the plate to our mouths, what role design plays in changing this experience, and for what reason. I first looked at the basics of what we understand as cutlery and our cultural and social conditioning around how we use it. The types of hand held tools we use in daily life to eat and consume food, and how they are expected to be held. The different contact points within each tool follow our expectations and behaviour, which dictate a consistent standardised form within most tools for eating. My process looked at altering the standardised proportions of the contact points within each design that are allocated for food, the hand, and the table. I was interested in how this changes our experience and judgement of the eating process. Etiquette and expectations can be altered through the subtle questioning of proportions, weight, material, and colour, breaking our automation towards the homogeneity of most cutlery we engage with. The Signal Series. The power and beauty of the circular form emphasise the materiality that characterises this Series. Made exclusively in single-origin mined gold and post-hospital waste sterling silver. Complete provenance from extraction to completion, at a time when transparency is at its most important.
