🌱☀️ The first day of spring. Anthea Hamilton’s Cauliflower Sundial catches the Aspen light on the Museum Commons—crowned with a working sundial that marks the passing hours through shifting shadow and sun. Cast in aluminum and enlarged from a 3D scan of an actual cauliflower, the sculpture transforms an everyday vegetable into a theatrical timekeeper. A few behind-the-scenes moments from last summer, when the sculpture first came to the Commons. 🌞 __ Installation view: Anthea Hamilton, Cauliflower Sundial, 2025.

"What I love about vegetables is their resistance... they have their encoded, willful behavior and we’re mere witness to it." 🥦 Anthea Hamilton’s commission, Cauliflower Sundial, transforms a "hunk of metal" into a living tool that responds to the Aspen sun and the surrounding mountains. By giving this monumental form a functional purpose, Hamilton strips away the "macho" weight of traditional sculpture in favor of something responsive, submissive, and deeply "pop." Anthea Hamilton: Cauliflower Sundial Commissioned for the Museum Commons, the work takes the form of a monumental brassica crowned with a functional sundial at its apex. This juxtaposition of natural imagery and manufactured materiality is a recurring theme in Hamilton’s practice. At once surreal, sensual, enigmatic, and pop, the sculpture invites reflection on transformation and the absurd. Now on view at the Aspen Art Museum—plan your visit at the link in bio. — Installation view: Anthea Hamilton, Cauliflower Sundial, Aspen Art Museum, 2025. Photo: Paul Salveson

The ‘Scrambled Sky’ by Anthea Hamilton is currently installed in our London HQ as part of the group show ‘Ellipse and Ellipsis’, curated by Vittoria de Franchis. The wallpaper of a cloudy and pixellated sky creates a sliding space suggesting different approaches to reality’s edges and how we relate with them. Sky’s (not) the Limit but an ethereal, conceptual, digital threshold prompting an exercise in imagination—one that, as Hamilton puts it, allows us to “enter the shadowy sensation of culture, where a strange entity becomes open and available to you. But to meet it, you must reach across a void with your whole self, so that it can become concrete.” Visit ‘Ellipse and Ellipsis’ until 21 June 2025. By appointment: [email protected]. 📍Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation Flat 3, 8 Chelsea Embankment London SW3 4LE Installation view by Eva Herzog. 🎏 Upcoming at #FondazioneMemmo Anthea Hamilton | Soft You Curated by Alessio Antoniolli Opening Wednesday, May 7 | 6.30-8 pm “Soft You”, taken from the last monologue by Othello, in Shakespeare, reframes three cardinal points in Hamilton’s research: the Shakespearian’s protagonist, the city of Rome and the artist’s own practice. Starting from “Othello: A Play”, her stage performance created in collaboration with Delphine Gaborit for the artistic center De Singel (Antwerp) in 2024, Hamilton’s exhibition pushes the performative possibilities of her sculptural and installation-based research. @alessio_antoniolli @hamiltonanthea _____ Stay tuned and join us for the opening! 🔥 #AntheaHamilton #SoftYou #AlessioAntoniolli #Upcoming #FondazioneMemmo #Opening

Announcing Anthea Hamilton as part of The Perimeter's upcoming In Conversation for Ensemble Anthea Hamilton was born in London in 1978, where she lives and works. She was one of four shortlisted artists for the 2016 Turner Prize. Her approach has often focused on extended study into archives, scientific research and popular culture combining these with resonant images and objects in unusual and surreal ways. In addition, Hamilton consistently considers aspects of presentation beyond her objects and images, applying wallpaper, carpet, vinyl and painted surfaces to the walls and floors and introducing costume and performance within her work. Recent solo presentations include: Othello: A Play, De Singel, Antwerp, Belgium (2024); Decade of Emotion, Bourse de Commerce - Pinault Collection, Paris, France (2023); Cold, Cold Heart, kaufmann repetto, Milan, Italy; Mash Up, Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp, Belgium (2022); Primetime, a commission by Hayward Gallery, London, England (2022); The Prude, Thomas Dane Gallery, London, England (2019); The New Life, Secession, Vienna, Austria (2018); The Squash, Tate Britain, London, England (2018); Anthea Hamilton Reimagines Kettle’s Yard, Hepworth Wakefield, Wakefield, England (2017); Lichen! Her work has been presented as part of the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019, the British Art Show 8 and in numerous international venues including the Schinkel Pavilion, Berlin (with Nicholas Byrne), the 13th Lyon Biennale, and the 10th Gwangju Biennale. In Conversation: Mary Evans, Adam Farah-Saad, Anthea Hamilton Tuesday 11 March 2025, 6:30 - 8:00 pm Gustave Tuck Lecture Theatre, UCL, The Slade School of Fine Art Wavy Wizened Boot, 2019 Walnut wood, Burr walnut veneer Courtesy the artist and Thomas Dane Gallery. © Anthea Hamilton Photo: Maxwell Tomlinson; Stephen James

4th Guimard Chastity Belt, Perspex, steel fixings, chain, dried organic material, Anthea Hamilton, 2016 This sculpture mimics the form of a chastity belt, underwear designed to stop the wearer, typically female, from engaging in sexual activity. They remind us here of the way women’s bodies have been controlled and their sexuality policed. Hamilton’s stated inspiration for this series is characteristically broad. The laser-cut design is inspired by Art Nouveau pioneer Hector Guimard (1867-1942), famous for designing the entrances to the Paris Metro system. The work was also informed by the artist’s interest in the body armour of Henry VIII (1491-1547). [The first image is an orange background with green text that reads, Anthea Hamilton. The second image features a translucent perspex sculpture, suspended by metal chains. It has a unique, curved shape with intricate cut-out patterns and embedded natural elements, including dried plants and flowers] Conversations 19 Oct 2024—9 Mar 2025 FREE entry, donations welcome #WalkerArtGallery #Conversations #ContemporaryArt #Sculpture #Liverpool

ANTHEA HAMILTON - OTHELLO: A PLAY Fri 27 Sep - Sat 28 Sep @desingelartscentre With Othello: A Play, British artist Anthea Hamilton creates her very first stage performance alongside long-term collaborator Delphine Gaborit. This new creation, premiering at DE SINGEL, marks a new and ambitious key moment in Hamilton's career. It further expands the performative possibilities of her sculptural and installation practice. Othello - the character, the icon, the play of the same name - is the starting point. Hamilton shows three figures playing, negotiating and wrestling with the limits of freedom, ambition and creation. She uses the possibility of the stage to unravel and re-imagine these dynamics, blurring the boundaries between the personal and the iconic. Othello: A Play once again demonstrates Hamilton's fascination with various systems, codes and media outside the tradition of visual art. Performers: Naim Belhaloumi, Alphonse Eklou, Nathan Feliot Artist and co-director: Anthea Hamilton Movement and co-director: Delphine Gaborit Curator and production manager: Anne-Claire Schmitz Production assistant: Celine Aernoudt Musical arrangement: Andrew McDonnell Costumes: Felix Choong, Manuel Vadillo Videography: Tanguy Poujol @hamiltonaanthea @delphine_gaborit @anneclaireschmitz @iamprince_s @alphonseeklouuwantege @nathan.feliot @aernoudtceline @andymcdonnell @poujolapachole @felixchoong @ellentes Big thanks to Michiel Vandevelde and Aurore Werniers for the great opportunity.
