Two years ago I donated 238 Black Panther Newspapers to The Met to help advocate their vital history and Akili Tommasino and Allie Rudnick’s work championing Emory Douglas and his legacy as an artist and the minister of culture for the Black Panthers. I made this donation in honor of Walter and Linda Evans who allowed me to witness the importance of caretaking and stewarding history, not just ownership. The relationship to photography, journalism, printmaking, storytelling and America acts as a ‘by us for us’ history class or better yet, proof. Now, more than ever, is the time to enact a better world in any way we feel catalyzed to. I grew up frequenting “junk” shops and estate sales with my grandma since I was a young kid and found my first issue of these papers when I was 16, sixteen years later I’m humbled to share they are a part of the worlds most important encyclopedic collection. A big part of my practice is collecting postcards, tchotchkes, newspapers, objects, vernacular photography, American history and much more— I’m so thankful for Akili and Allie for helping me find space for this part of my life to live on outside of my personal archive.
Im steadfast on our next steps with this ongoing project and in addition to the newspapers (which I still am actively collecting to continue my research) The Met has acquired 50 of Emory’s works to see up close and study the hand and mind of one of the visual leaders of our time. The possibility of a more equitable world is all around us and we must never lose sight of the ones who laid the bricks we stand on and better yet take time to analyze how they are laid to cultivate a more sturdy footing moving forward. To a more robust future and a keen legibility when thinking about our shared history.
Humbled to be included in Harper’s Bazaar Icons 2025 issue
