“Off the Grid” by Julia Couzens
Paint, rope, yarn, fabric on canvas
40 x 30 x 2”
2024
Picking up tattered threads, Couzens makes new systems out of the detritus of the old. Relishing touch, she gathers remnants and strands, using them like a painter in unconventional ways to transcend their humble origins. In “Off the Grid”, quadrants of frayed threads and ropes merge and unravel to depict an unpredictable and random pattern. Rather than attempt to impose her own vision, Couzens listens to the material to learn what it might say and reveal.

“Security Storm” by Michele Pred
Umbrella, bullets, monofilament
42 x 36 x 36”
2016
In Pred’s words, “Security Storm is a suspended umbrella with bullets of varying sizes raining down beneath. The arraignment asks us to consider what it means to be protected and feel secure as well as ask who is providing that protection. The bullets are also a stark reminder of how immersed in gun-culture we are here in the United States. We are virtually swimming in a sea of “protection”, yet, as a nation, we feel increasingly vulnerable. Why is that? The current astronomical murder rate and the nation-leading number of citizens (predominately of color) shot and killed by police demand that we think, talk and act to find viable solutions right now!”

“Piggyback” by Carol Benioff
Monoprint
10 x 12”
2014
Carol Benioff creates narrative artworks exploring how societal pressures mark both the psychological and physical state of women. Her work expresses the visceral sensations many young women feel – being ignored, unheard, constrained, and often uncomfortable in one’s own skin. These sentiments are illustrated in “Piggyback”, in which one masked woman carries another on her back, visibly burdened by the weight of her counterpart. Though perhaps they are not two, but rather one.
