sOuNd tHiNkS tHeY’rE SOOOOO funny 🫠 Yes, yes we do. At least half of us got into creating shows because of entertainment. We might as well let out some invasive thoughts in the form of art. Share it, keep sharing it, I guarantee more people than you’d expect will enjoy it.

The decibel meter is fighting for its life 😮‍💨 🎙️ This is Sescom’s 2-Channel Mic Pad, built to handle extreme SPL environments, it attenuates overwhelming levels before they destroy your take (or your favorite mic), delivering clean, dynamic audio without sacrificing fidelity. Whether you’re recording in the studio or out in the field, this little unit will be your insurance to ensure volume never gets the best of your session—even when things get wildly out of control.

Different mic’s for different sights 👀 Outdoors we usually use shotgun microphones for their tighter pickup pattern. This helps reject u wanted ambient noises like cars, wind in trees, road noise, a nearby turkey, etc. Shotguns are also used indoors, but their nature also makes the sensitive to noises directly behind the mic, which is where ceiling reflections come from when booming overhead. It can sound both close and echoey at the same time for this reason in some rooms. Enter the cardioid & supercardioid. While more forgiving with how you aim them, they’re also less susceptible to noises coming from behind them. This means that indoor spaces have more reflections off of walls than the ceiling when booming overhead, and there’s more likely to be bodies and furniture in the way to help diffuse the echoes. The wider pattern means they pick up more ambience, which is less ideal outdoors. They’re also usually shorter, an advantage when fighting height above camera. So yes, we want both. Sometimes more than one of each.

Got any set games? We really need some new ones. Our Uno deck is getting worm through and we keep chewing the chess pieces or chasing after the PAs with the knights while making horses noises. Help your sound team out: watcha got?

An ad made for a recent event. Please do everyone a favour and don’t plan to fix the sound in post. Your video is worse for it, the attention it gets is worse off, the message is less sticky, just don’t. Record it right. Follow for more tips.

Kenny Strain method > back problems Boom from a comfortable position as often as possible. There used to be a statistic that boom operators’ life expectancy was right around 63. That’s shocking. And it’s unnecessary. Improving your form will increase your ability to continue on the long days and reduce recovery time afterwards. Stretching and strength training is always a good thing, and they’re enhanced by requiring less rest time due to physical posture related stress and abuse. Also, use the lightest boom pole you can get. It’s a little expensive, but it’s cheaper than chiropractor visits.

You know THAT question? The one they always ask: “What are you filming?” “Is it a movie?” “Can I be in it?” “Is someone famous here?” “What’s a mayonnaise commercial?” Ok that last one is after my response. It works, by the way. I’ve turned away many a nosy pedestrian with the ol’ mayonnaise commercial line. I suppose though that after enough times of us getting in the way of the public- -blocking roads, pausing sidewalk traffic, taking over stores, paying the guy across the road to quit the yard work for an hour- It’s only fair that they get to mess with us from time to time as well.

Full video on YouTube, link 🔗 in bio Does specialized tools like this make it into your workflow? If you have them, are they useful or do they only get used when you really want to make them work? I have had great success using shapewear to hid a mic when the situation called for it. It’s really irreplaceable to me when it’s what’s needed. I’d love to hear if you use things like this or if you get creative with everyday items instead
