"Executive chef and co-owner Csilla Thackray did something you don't see often enough nowadays: pay her dues prior to striking out on her own," dining critic Hal B. Klein writes.
"Thackray has always shown ambition, which makes it all the more impressive that she allowed herself the time to develop the technical and operational skills of running a kitchen before opening Titusz in Lawrenceville at the beginning of April."

The start of the NFL Draft created “A Tale of Two Cities” scenario for Pittsburgh’s restaurant owners. While things were grim outside of the draft footprint, business thrived inside the event.
“It was our busiest day ever. Ever. Ever. Ever, ever,” said Tom’s Watch Bar operating partner Billy Smalls.
But in other neighborhoods around the city, restaurants braced for a big boost that didn't quite materialize in the first two days of the draft.

I moved to Pittsburgh 15 years ago today. Doing so was the best decision of my life. I planned to stay here for two or three years to earn a master’s degree in food studies … and here I am all this time later. I formed an incredible community of friendship, built a meaningful career and get to participate every day in the life of this tremendous city. I adopted a magnificent dog/clown called Cleo, performed in cabarets and organized a massive project about dumplings. Grateful for everyone who has crossed my path in this 15 years and looking forward to the next 15 here in Pittsburgh.
I grabbed lunch with @halbklein a few weeks back and we chatted everything Pittsburgh food over the last 10+ years. Hal’s work is truly inspiring and is super cool to see how it affects the scene here. If you haven’t checked out his recent International McKnight Road Trip head over to the @pittsburghpg and check it out 🍾
A few 2024 professional/personal highlights.
The @theculinaryinstituteofamerica honored me with a Master of Aesthetics in Gastronomy award, celebrating “the clarity of your writing, the sparkle of your prose, and the brilliance of your career.”
The Pittsburgh Dumpling Project stands out among numerous stories I loved telling this year for the @pittsburghpg . It’s a deep dive into Pittsburgh’s immigrant foodways through the lens of dumplings, and a guide to where you can find the best ones. The great @gtmckay adds to the project with stories and recipes from home cooks.
Mornings on @pittsburghtodaylive are always a treat. Look for more chats in 2025.
Performed live for the first time in years thanks to @aokorsky heck of a lot of fun bingo bango cabaret. Rewrote “Dreamlover” to “Dream Dumpling.” I sure did. Resolution: more of this in 2025.
Joined @discosundaydisco as DJ Smokinmeats. Jk. Yet I did land on the poster with esteemed merry makers @hoagiedreams@dj_dinidaddy2.0 and @prettytonyphoto / somehow ended up running the lights at Hot Mass for like 1.5 hours in October.
Here’s to more stories, more adventure, more thrills and more joy in 2025.
There’s a boomlet of Uzbek restaurants in Pittsburgh. I’m here for it and you should be, too. Link in bio for more on this crossroads cuisine with more than 2,000 years of history.
