"I should be proud. My PhD took four years of my life. But it was the beginning of my life project in Gaza." When @halahanina began her PhD in the UK, she had a long list of contacts back in Palestine who were involved, from participants to interviewees to collaborators. By the time she submitted her PhD at the end of last year, most of those people had been killed in Israel's genocide. The day that Hala submitted her PhD should have been a day of celebration and preparation for departure, but instead it was a reminder that Hala still can't return home. Part of this is that the alleged 'ceasefire' in place is not a ceasefire at all; Israel has killed 738 Palestinians since agreeing to cease fire. Palestinians living in Palestine face the threat of death every day. Even if that weren't the case, Israel has established and maintains a myriad of policies and practices to not only transfer Palestinians out of Palestine, but also to prevent their return - for instance, by using the Palestinian population registry to deny Palestinians entry and residence. Israel's genocide is ongoing, and the UK Government - the very government that recognised Hala's brilliance in granting her a Chevening Scholarship to study in the UK - has meanwhile been complicit in the destruction of her home. 🎵 'Resolutions' by Scott Buckley #FreePalestine #NotACeasefire #VoicesOfGaza

May 15 marks 78 years since the Nakba — the mass displacement of more than 750,000 Palestinians in 1948 through Zionist settler-colonial violence. But for Palestinians, the Nakba is not history. It continues today through the genocide in Gaza, the colonisation of the West Bank, and the ongoing dispossession of Palestinian life and land. Danah Bseiso @besaisodanah is a Palestinian law student specialising in Public International Law, a writer with We Are Not Numbers, and a contributor to Leiden University’s Picturing Scholasticide project documenting the destruction of education in Gaza. Haia Mohammed @dear.anam.cara is a Palestinian poet and artist whose work explores memory, displacement, grief, and survival. Her debut collection, The Age of Olive Trees, traces years of longing, witness, and resistance through poetry and art.
