Dang we got lucky. It’s going to be a beautiful, perfect weekend out here in Lake Lure. Come find me at the Lake Lure Arts and Crafts Festival (Saturday 10-5, Sunday 10-4) right next door to the historic Lake Lure Inn. Lake Lure got hit hard by Hurricane Helene and it has been a long road to recovery. Come out, show your support, and support local businesses!

Ok, “raccoon attack” is a bit unfair, they were simply accessing a natural food source, as they should be: spotted salamander eggs! Cristina found a bunch of egg masses lying outside the pond a couple days ago and we knew our local raccoon family had come hunting in the night. And while we love the idea of creating functional ecosystems in our yard, it’s hard not to become attached, so we were a bit distressed that our new friends (the baby spotted salamanders) had suffered a setback. But Cristina rescued as many survivors as she could, still in the eggs but fully formed and ready to emerge, and placed them back into the pond. I’m thrilled to report that this is the first larva we’ve spotted, successfully hatched! And there must be many more! Best birthday present ever.! I look forward to watching their progress and seeing them transform to juvenile form! ❤️ #spottedsalamander

Eastern Screech Owl! We often hear these guys making creepy whistles and soft cooing whinnies in the night. But it’s the first resident we’ve seen in our owl box this year! Beautiful red morph and gorgeous eyes. Little badass. Thanks to @cristina.garcia.art for taking this lovely pic!
