Haku Shah was born on this day in 1934 in Valod, Gujarat. Throughout his life, he moved with ease between the disciplines of art, design, ethnography and pedagogy.
He transformed and touched many lives - from his students to craftspeople and visionary artists who worked outside the traditional framework of the artworld. Haku Shah curated several important exhibitions and published extensively about the material culture of rural and indigenous India.
His friends, collaborators and admirers included artists, curators, architects, designers from around the world including American designers, Charles and Ray Eames, adacemics such as Eberhard Fischer and Jyotindra Jain, and pathbreaking architects such as BV Doshi and Charles Correa.
The exhibition, Haku Shah: Ya Ghat Bheetar / Rediscovering Form, curated by
@jesal_thacker , brings forth many of these aspects of his life and work. On view until April 30, come visit us at
