Founded by childhood friends Hak Baker, Leon Brown, and Tayla Clark, Block Brew and its signature Reef House Lager mark a historic milestone as the UK’s first Black-owned beer brand. Growing up together on the Isle of Dogs, the founders designed the project as a tribute to their community and a reclamation of their East London heritage. The brewery operates with a "no boardrooms, no backers" philosophy, ensuring that it remains 100% independent and grassroots at its core.
🏚 The "Reef House" Legacy
The brand takes its name directly from Reef House, the specific social housing block where the founders spent their youth. To further cement this local connection, the brand’s visual identity features artwork by Reuben Dangoor, who hand-painted a scene based on a photograph of the three founders taken at the block twenty years ago by renowned British photographer Simon Wheatley. This focus on local storytelling highlights the multiculturalism and resilience of the "Island," a place with a decorated history of independence and community support.
🍻 Product and Philosophy
The flagship Reef House Lager is a 4.6% premium, gluten-free beer that prioritises high drinkability and traditional quality.
🛢 Brewing Profile: It offers a balanced palette of grassy bitterness and herbal notes, finished with a smooth malty sweetness, designed to be a "proper" pint for local pubs.
🍺 Cultural Presence: Beyond the bottle, the brand has gained traction through high-profile collaborations with East London’s Signature Brew and the East End Trades Guild, hosting community events like the "East End Knees Up" to preserve the spirit of independent British pubs.
For the founders, Reef House is more than just a beverage, it is a tool to stamp their belonging on a city that is constantly changing. By keeping the mission focused on inclusive spaces like youth clubs and local boozers, Block Brew ensures that the heritage of the Isle of Dogs remains at the forefront of the UK’s craft beer scene.
