Here is an idea for a studio rack I drew up recently. It's meant for an engineer who has a minimal keyboard / controller setup in front of them, maybe a big screen at the wall for minimal obstruction between speakers and ears, but still wants outboard to their side. All parts just slot into each other, no screws (except for the rails). You dig?

Finally finished building the summing amp/mixer I designed.
All thanks to @mannnicknjm (Nick Mann aka NJM Audio) who very kindly guided me through the circuit drawings and really provided all the knowledge and expertise I am lacking. So this little box isn’t designed to magically sprinkle depth and width and musical greatness to your mix through analog summing. Actually, it’s rather clean and transparent. For most parts it’s an active mixer design. It’s purpose is to make use of analog outboard when ITB mixing. You got a total of 24 inputs, divided into 3 subgroups (A, B, C). Each subgroup are 8 inputs into a stereo out. Meant to be used with a normalled patchbay for inserts across each subgroup. The insert returns of each group is routed to the master mix bus, but can also be switched into a fourth bus (Stereo D) for parallel processing. For example, you could feed group A (drums) and group B (instruments) into bus D, smash the hell out of it using your fav compressor or whatever, and feed a bit of that back into the master. Or you could use the ‘D’ bus to audition two different mix bus chains etc etc. Each subgroup has a mute switch.
But to add a little bit of colour, I added the option to switch the master mix bus to a passive summing circuit. For the make up gain of the passive option, I used @audiomaintenance ez3415 boards with Carnhill transformers. Subtle, a little saturation in the lows…
And… the NE5534 IC’s for all active mixers can be swapped for any DOA ones. So be could experiment with CAPI 2520 types or John Hardy 990s or many others for sonic options and flavours.
No faders or gain pots. All stages are unity gain. The active mixing is based in Ted Fletcher’s supernal circuit. Using this genius bit of circuitry was also Nick’s idea.
