The fight for divestment in Hackney may yet be won. In this piece, Gwen Jones documents Hackney Council’s long history of opposition to pro-divestment campaigning, revealing a major lack of transparency in its decision-making processes - with key discussions taking place away from public view, and private pro-Israel lobby groups being invited to the table while workers and residents are consistently ignored. ‘As Hackney goes to the polls, at issue is not only divestment, but whether the council’s fundamental decision-making structures are actually fit for purpose.’ ‘For campaigners, the past five years have revealed a system in which oversight, consultation and access – at least by workers and residents – are sorely lacking.’ ‘Whether that system is able to withstand mounting political pressure will depend, like much else, on what may be Hackney’s most consequential elections in decades.’ Read the full article here: /2026/04/27/opinion-campaign-divestment-hackney/

Vigil outside Hackney Town Hall today to mark the 78th anniversary of Nakba Day. Nakba (‘the catastrophe’) refers to the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people through violent displacement and dispossession of their land, property, and belongings, along with the destruction of their society in 1948. #SayHelloHackney

You know your campaign to divest billions is succeeding when UK lawyers for Israel get scared and start making baseless threats. 🎥 Watch the video for the full story. 🔗 Link in bio for ways to join the campaign and continue to Shake the CIV into divesting all London council pension funds. #divestforpalestine #shaketheciv

Join Hackney residents outside the Town Hall to mark the 78th anniversary of Nakba Day. The historic catastrophe saw Palestinian people displaced from their homes and society destroyed by the Israeli Settler State in 1948. In honour of this history and of the destruction caused by the ongoing Nakba, we reflect on the work that still needs to be done locally to achieve the Palestinian call for BDS. 🕯️Friday 15 May, 6pm, Town Hall

Here are key victories that came out of the local elections for the Vote Palestine grassroots campaigns. We have shown that our movement is a force that cannot be ignored. This was an election where Palestine was on the ballot and we will continue to wage our struggle through every means and every election possible. Despite these wins, grassroots campaigners will not stop advocating for Pledged Candidates to uphold their commitment to voters and divest from all companies complicit in the genocide and occupation of Palestine. Until full divestment and liberation!

Friday’s historic results in Hackney, and across London, are a monumental victory for our movement. This was an election in which Palestine was firmly on the ballot – and our community put it there. Our representatives cannot ignore it. They cannot remain complicit. We will never stop fighting for a free Palestine. After years of obstruction in Hackney, we now have a council committed to making divestment happen. And we will continue to fight until it does. For everyone who played a part in making this happen – thank you. This is what community looks like ❤️🇵🇸

*TIME TO VOTE* <3 What a journey! Hackney Votes Palestine was started in response to Hackney Council’s complicity in the genocide in Palestine, and it’s complete disregard for the residents they claim to represent. Over the last 12 months, it has become increasingly clear that the people of Hackney are tired of being ignored, and they’re ready for change. Thank you to everyone who’s played a role in this campaign, your energy, enthusiasm, and love for Hackney has been amazing to see. We’re nearly there, it’s time to vote for Palestine 🍉
