Michael Hampton: Founding Father of Power-Funk Guitar!
Michael Hampton joined Parliament-Funkadelic when he was 17 and has been with the band for more than 50 years. His new solo EP, “Into the Public Domain,” blends funk, fusion, heavy rock, and more. Here, he works on a demo using an Ovation 1515 then plugs in with his ’60s Guyatone parts guitar he says is similar to the LG80T, followed by a glimpse at his Emperador, a vintage Guyatone-adjacent axe made in Japan for the Canadian market. I’m playing 1960 Gibson 330 with 345 neck and heavily modified pickups, that I got from freedom guitar in San Diego, CA 7 years ago for super cheap, through marble amp, Dutch made tweed deluxe clone.
