Something a bit different. A little post-op support for Keith on its way to California. The handle is a piece of Zebrano that's been sat on a shelf for over 20 years waiting for a home. Likewise the Amazeque in the shaft. Tied together with a morsel of local Burr Oak and a slice of brass.

A blank in the vacuum in preparation for two days of workshops in St Agnes in just under three weeks time. Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th May. I'm making a couple of extra benches to accommodate a group on the Sunday so I might have one bench space free if anyone fancies joining us at short notice. Send me a message if so.

S1664S. Built in 1951 on the south coast as a Parcels and Miscellaneous Vehicle (PMV), one of 111 plywood clad vans and one of the last few built. But for the way they were clad they were essentially the same as the first of this type of van built in the 1920's.
Much of the final layer of the van's decals disappeared as soon as I started cleaning this small panel from it's side, but the four previous layers of paint and hand painted weights and identification still remain in part underneath. So it's had 5 different identities during its 75 years before becoming a chicken house and soon to be accomodation.
One thing I can't find out is what the aluminium number plate relates to. I'm assuming National Coal Board as they had their own rolling stock, but the NCB could just be a coincidence. Anyone out there with any knowledge of these things?

Natural oiled Birch.

'Pickled' Birch. (Cider vinegar with rusty old steel soaked in it, creating Iron Acetate)

Birch with red earth pigment (used to colour lime wash) dissolved in Tung oil.

Naturally beautiful and colourful!

Dates are set, with at least two days and maybe a third on the Friday or Monday. The Saturday is almost full (but I could build another bench to accommodate more if needed).
Message me for more information, or have a look at the post a little way back through my feed for a full description.

If you're a railway history purist, now might be a good time to look away! It's been more than three and a half years since we dragged this thing (PMV S1664S - more on the history on another day) back to the farm, with no real plan!
'Restoration' is stretching it just a bit. Having been sat in a field for 10 or 15 years with chickens and sheep living in it, with it's original chassis long gone it was in a rough condition with most of the bottom rotted away.
So the first thing was to find a new chassis and build a home to be able to work on it. The next step might seem a little brutal, but to try to convert the inside to the level I want using the existing battered structure wasn't going to work. The one piece I could work with is the roof and in particular the inside of it, which I wanted to keep intact.
So we built a metal frame inside to support the roof while we cut all the sides off! There are around 2000 bolts and rivets holding the metalwork together and the timber to the frame, none of which would undo. So I cut off all of the timber that I could then burnt the remaining timber from the metalwork so that the bolts could be cut. I've got a pile of the timber that I've cleaned and machined to reuse on the interior.
The plan is to strip and repair as much of the metalwork as possible and to reuse it to recreate the exterior as closely as I can to how it would have looked when it was first built in 1951.
On the outside at least. I've now got an insulated box that mimics the original structure that I can build out in a slightly more luxurious fashion than the original spartan, utilitarian interior. Though there will be a nod to it's previous life.
If plans work out it'll go out in the field with the treehouse and be available to let sometime later this summer 🤞

Andy's letting us back again! I'm going to be back down in Andy's barns for a few more days workshops in the spring. I'm thinking sometime in May perhaps. Same format as before, so a brilliant space for a start! Pick your board you want to shape on the day and I'll pre-prepare the blank. You'll get to vacuum press a second blank on the day to take away and finish. All wrapped up in a day. Just getting an idea of numbers at this stage. I've already got 5 spaces filled so drop me a message if you've got any questions or are interested in saving a space.

Last board for 2025! Time for something different for a bit..👉 pic 3. Three and a half years waiting to give it my full attention! Let's see how long I can keep it going. I can go into a little more detail if anyone is interested? I could bore you if you'd like!

Scaled down Petinga (to comply with IBSA regulations), but also a thinner lighter construction. No cork ribs, but a sharp downturned rails and 4mm thick tail. The same Cork handle as the larger board, just trimmed a little around the edges to fit. 40 x 24cm and just over 500g with the handle.

If you're going to get a pair of travel boards for your Christmas trip you might as well do it with style. Pair of Piglets, one with Tiger Oak and stringer deck and the second with book matched local Spalted Pear. If you want a board that will pretty much do everything, and you can throw in the suitcase.....

Cheers!
The starting point for this was a set of solid bronze (or so I thought) handles from a pair of art deco bedside cabinets made in Czechoslovakia in the 1920's. The frame is English Sycamore and Poplar, with book matched Poplar Burr veneers on the sides and doors. And to match the vintage handles, solid bronze fittings on the insides of the doors and tips of the feet.
