The act of consuming human flesh is one of the oldest and most deeply disturbing chapters in human history. Archaeological evidence suggests the practice dates back at least 800,000 years, with fossilized human bones bearing cut marks and signs of marrow extraction found across Europe, indicating that even our earliest ancestors engaged in the consumption of their own kind.
Throughout history, cannibalism has taken many forms. Ritual or mortuary cannibalism was practiced in various cultures as a means of absorbing the strength, courage, or spirit of the deceased or a defeated enemy. Tribes in Papua New Guinea, the Amazon basin, and parts of West Africa documented by European explorers reportedly consumed the dead as acts of respect or dominance. Survival cannibalism, perhaps the most widely known form in the modern era, occurs under extreme conditions, most famously among the survivors of the 1972 Andes plane crash, who consumed the bodies of the deceased to stay alive for 72 days in freezing temperatures.
On the pathological end of the spectrum, documented cases of criminal cannibalism have horrified the modern world. Albert Fish, Andrei Chikatilo, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Armin Meiwes are among history's most notorious cannibalistic killers, each case a descent into a psychological abyss that forensic science still struggles to fully explain.
Medically, consuming human flesh carries severe risks. Kuru, a fatal prion disease similar to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, decimated the Fore people of Papua New Guinea through their funerary cannibalism practices, causing progressive neurological degeneration and death.
The human body, it turns out, is not meant to be on the menu.
