How exactly does the #CST combat disinvestment and displacement? Let's let CST Director Avery Ebron break it down.
The Community Stewardship Trust (CST) is a community-owned model that removes land and buildings from the speculative market and places them into collective stewardship, so neighborhoods aren’t constantly at the mercy of outside investors.
Properties are held in a community-owned trust.
Residents and workers connected to the neighborhood can become co-owners.
Decisions are made through democratic governance: one person, one vote.
Removing land from speculation (buying primarily to extract profit) stabilizes rents and long-term, giving people the opportunity to stay put and have real power over what gets built and for whom.
This is what it looks like when land is treated like a shared resource, not a commodity. This is the CST. As we get closer to the investment offering going live, what questions do you have about the CST?
To go from a home owner in SW Atlanta to investing and becoming a steward of a community owned building is the example I’m proud to set for the next generation of my family. Normalizing real estate investing for generational wealth creation is of upmost importance. This is an ode to my personal mantra “Live like you have a legacy to leave” -Shaquetta Mashet Smith

This is what it looks like to have the spaces we hold dear off the real estate market and locked into community ownership. When we can combine our resources to hold down the infrastructure and grow in place.

One of the major issues we discussed on Monday was gentrification, which has far-reaching consequences for communities, particularly in urban areas like Atlanta. Nikishka
Iyengar of The Guild in Atlanta explains that gentrification is not just about rising rents; it’s about the displacement of long-standing residents and the erasure of cultural identities. By recognizing the systemic roots of gentrification, community members can better advocate for policies that protect their neighborhoods and promote sustainable development.
