Surrounded by native Banyan, Blackbutt, Greybark, and the island’s iconic Kentia Palms, Island House embraces intimacy and refuge in a landscape often shaped by wind and weather.
Working closely with the client, Derive Architecture took a collaborative approach, reimagining and adapting existing structures to protect the site’s fragile ecosystem while enhancing connection between architecture and nature.
Crafted from lightweight, low-maintenance materials like Blackbutt cladding, copper, and micaceous steel, the home is designed to age beautifully over time.
Thoughtful apertures frame views of the surrounding forest, while glazed roof lights open to the island’s incredible night sky, offering a serene dialogue between built form and the wild beauty of Lord Howe Island.
