I didn’t know I liked cats when I first heard you were living in my apartment. Two nights later Josie and I stumbled in drunk sometime past 3am and there you were. I bent down to pet you and instead you climbed right on up and perched on my shoulder. You loved being on my shoulder. You were my cat and I was your human. It was instant and that was it. A few months later my brother died. You would lay on the floor with me for hours as I swam in the blackness of my drunken abyss. You didn’t mind my perpetual slovenliness, my unforgiving gloominess, or that I played Flipper over and over again.
We went through a lot together over the last fourteen odd years: You sat on my lap for every novel, every movie, and every album. You stole food off my guest’s plates and slept in their sleeping bags. You were a prankster that possessed an emotional intelligence I can only describe as cosmic. You always seemed to understand and you always seemed to accept.
I will miss everything about you. I will miss the slow, rolling timbre of your purr and the shrill command of your meow. I will miss your sweet, feline musk and your perpetually bad breath. I will miss your velvety, black fur and most of all I will miss the way your yellow eyes would gaze into mine as if you saw straight into my soul, as if you saw the entirety of my being, and yet you still never passed any kind of judgment. I love you Nina-Bug. Thank you for everything you taught me.
