History in the making: the inaugural GT3 race took place 20 years ago TODAY at Silverstone where Hector Lester, Allan Simonsen and JMB Racing’s Ferrari 430 became the class’ first-ever winners. Andrea Ceccato and Stefano Livio (Racing Box Dodge Viper) denied the same combination a clean sweep on Sunday.
Eight manufacturers and 44 entries contested the FIA GT3 European Championship season opener, which acted as chief support to another SRO-run series: the FIA GT Championship.
“The cost of GT2 had become unsustainable and it was being dominated by two manufacturers,” recalls Stéphane Ratel. “We had a lot of interest from teams and from tuners, which convinced us to launch a standalone series rather than integrate GT3 as a class within the FIA GT Championship.
“At the same time, we introduced a number of features – such as the sprint format of two one-hour races, with each car shared by two drivers – which had been pioneered in the Lamborghini Super Trophy. So we had a sense that it could be successful.”

Here are the provisional results for the second and final race of the opening round. It seems to have been a perfect weekend for Storic & Race Cars and their drivers, with both cars taking overall victories.
The Iron Cup was no different—Heiko Neumann and his Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 claimed two wins.
