This is G-Son Studios in Atwater Village — where the Beastie Boys wrote and recorded Check Your Head and Ill Communication, ran Grand Royal Records and served as home base for not just the Beastie Boys but so many in their orbit (Run-DMC, Beck, Biz Markie, Redd Kross).
After that, Diplo and Mad Decent took it over during one of his most amazing producing runs.
We took over the space in 2021. It needed a lot of work. It still does. But we’ve been chipping away at it, and we’re getting close to something amazing.
We haven’t posted much. But this felt like the right moment to start sharing what we’ve been doing — and what we’re building.

The Lounge at G-Son is covered in artwork and signatures from many of the artists who've passed through these doors over the past 30 years.

We're launching a Kickstarter soon to transform G-Son into a full-time community space and music venue. As part of that, we'll be inviting some contributors to add their names to these walls.

In May 2012 I had a studio with @diplo and @maddecent in the @gson_studios building where @beastieboys and Grand Royal were setup in the 90s. On May 4th 2012 Adam Yauch aka MCA passed at the young age of 47. I was working on the @jodyhighroller Neon Icon LP at the time and was often alone late into the night - On more than one occasion I waited to leave because someone had shown up very late to do a tribute to MCA on the walls around the studio. 2 years later on May 4th 2014 my daughter was born. We really lost a unique human and musician in MCA, RIP to one of the greatest

When we took over G-Son, the big wall in the Lounge was blank. But old photos and videos showed a massive mural that used to be there.
So we knocked on the wall. Hollow. Peeled back a bit of drywall. Paint underneath. Kept going.
What we found was awesome - The giant mural was pretty much fully intact behind the drywall!
Turns out Ione Skye painted it — she writes about her murals at G-Son in her memoir Say Everything and how it started off small, painting their friends as it spread from wall to wall to wall.
Before the book came out, Mario C came and actually walked us through who's who: Mike D and Tamra, Ad-Rock, MCA and Lisa Ann, and Mario himself.
When he got to a small girl in the corner, he said: "That's my goddaughter, Komana." Her name is written right above her with an arrow pointing down.
Then last year, Ione's brother Jack Graddis played a show here. Walked into the Lounge, looked up, and said: "Hey — my sister painted that!"
We love finding things like this and hearing peoples' stories from all eras of G-Son (if anyone knows any pre-Beastie Boys history, please hit us up!)
And a big THANK YOU to whoever decided to drywall over this mural instead of just painting over it!

Theme: Movement
A group visual art showcase with a selection of natural wines from Dining Room Today, snacks by Veronica Mclean, and live DJ mixes from Domo, Warm Bedrooms, and My Boogie Valentine.
Drawing inspiration from the movement of conversation, the dancefloor, the road, the mind moving forward, and the basketball court.
Artists were invited to explore and interpret movement through their own lens.
This event will also feature a screening of the short film STIFF, created by Will & Jackson Pruitt. STIFF is an avant-garde, genre-bending short about an ancient, withered man who wakes from years of stillness, struggling to reclaim his lost vitality. The film explores themes of decay, stagnation, and movement.
