There are a few things I’m celebrating and no, I don’t think it’s “too much.”😉
First, time flies 👀, 17/05 — my Sligoversary. What brought me here isn’t a story I owe in full. But I arrived with things to carry, to process, to untangle. And this place… met me SO gently.
With open doors, strangers who didn’t stay strangers for long and moments that slowly stitched me back together.
Somewhere along the way, people started calling me ‘Sarah the German’ what at first I didn’t like at all, not gonna lie.🥲 But now it feels like a little hug, like I’ve been given a place here.
I haven’t regretted coming for a second and I’m happy to say that.
And then there’s my birthday. I’ll say it as it is — I love celebrating it. Because another year lived properly (some have definitely witnessed that in a pub or two ☺️) to me is a privilege, not something I expect, but something I get to have.
So it only makes sense to bring it all together.

Vor der selben Haustür, die mir meine Mama vor ein paar Tagen nach meiner Heimfahrt freudig geöffnet hat, lag ich vor nun 30 Jahren. In einer schimmelnden Trage, ich mit Dreck verkrustest, bis dahin noch nie gebadet worden - als 7-monatiges Baby, das zum Glück vom Drumherum wenig verstand. Was ich aber wohl schnell verstand: hier gibt’s Liebe für mich. „Hier“ heißt bis heute konkret bei meinen Eltern. Denn das waren sie ab diesem Tag an, auch, wenn das zu dem Zeitpunkt nicht absehbar war.
Meine Eltern haben über Jahre hinweg immer wieder kurzfristig Pflegekinder aufgenommen, jedoch immer auf bestimmte Zeit. Kinder, die schnell einen sicheren oder behüteten Ort brauchten. So kam es, dass kurz vor Weihnachten ein Anruf kam. „Wir haben hier ein Baby, das muss schnell da raus, bevor etwas schlimmeres passiert, könnt ihr sie aufnehmen?“ - so kam’s, dass meine Eltern am Heilig Abend in die Stadt fuhren und ersteinmal eine komplette Grundausrüstung für ein Baby kauften und ich somit direkt in mein Weihnachtswunder katapultiert wurde. Menschen, die sich um mich kümmerten, mich fütterten, mich mit Liebe anschauten, mit mir sprachen. Aus Papieren geht hervor, dass ich mich die Monate zuvor als Baby selbst ernährt hatte - wenn ich das Glück hatte, dass man mir eine Flasche ins Bett legte ( aus dem ich kaum herausgenommen wurde, daher hatte bzw. habe ich bis heute meinen Spaß mit den Folgen einer Rachitiserkrankung), dann angelte ich mir die Flasche mit den Füßen und fütterte mich eben selbst. Lebenswille kann man mir nicht absprechen vermute ich.

When the group I was with today got asked who wants to get up and try a brush dance my first answer was actually ‚no‘ ‼️
And then I realised the reason behind that no was probably one of the stupidest reasons imaginable (& i even feel bit stupid telling you) : the fear that others might look at me and think I’m too fat. Nope, seriously.
A thought planted by years of hearing things like that even though they were never mine to carry in the first place.
But imagine I had missed this moment because of that.🥹
Imagine I had stayed sitting down instead of laughing, dancing badly, trying something new and creating a memory I’ll genuinely keep.🥲
Nobody remembers the moments they looked “perfect”.
They remember the moments they felt alive.
And surely that’s the whole point of all this in the end. There we go 🫰🏻
