“Bats”
36 x 24 in. Oil on canvas.
The Taino, indigenous peoples from the Caribbean, believed that bats were embodied, deceased souls. Bat caves were thus passageways to the underworld.

“The Baby’s Riddle”
Oil on canvas. 52.5 x 42.25 in.
This painting is based off an otherworldly dream I recently had.
In it, I was laying in bed at night flipping through an old sketchbook. A baby swooped in and floated at the side of my bed. He gave me a riddle: Legend has it that the Buddha hosts a reunion of people laughing together in hell, and the clouds in the sky come from heaven. He then asked, when the end comes and I join heaven will I see clouds in the sky or joyous laughter? I answered “joyous laughter!” I then saw a field of light in which deceased souls observed and lovingly laughed at the activities of the living. The baby, in a proud, happy, deep voice, yelled “Yes! Hahahaha!!” and flew right to me as the dream ended.

“Portrait of the Artist”
Oil on wood from my grandfather’s house. 24 x 18 x 1 in.
Growing up, my grandpa would tell me to look into the Benin Bronzes. Lately, I’ve looked for ways to integrate their iconic characteristics into my work. Simultaneously, it’s been important for me to reference the beauties of the Caribbean landscape.

“Crater in El Salvador”
Oil on canvas. 24 x 18 in
Amongst my most incredible experiences are two that are referenced here: The total eclipse in Maine and the point of impact of an asteroid in El Salvador. Both sights suggested that this world was not made for us, but rather that we are powerless dots caught within a web of astronomic phenomena that move outside of our control.

Viewing Spain from Morocco
Oil on wood from my grandfather’s house. 10.75 x 40.5 x 0.75 in
During my stay in Madrid, I took a train, to a bus, to a ferry to Tangier, Morocco. There, I found a cliff at which you could see the tip of Spain across the Mediterranean Sea. I felt wonder and terror witnessing these continental masses, Africa and Europe, that are seemingly so far a part, all in one view.

Rapture
Oil on canvas and wood from the studio of Iria Leino. 59.25 x 43.75 in
Earlier this year I had the privilege to help manage the estate of rediscovered artist Iria Leino. In this piece, using her materials, I aimed to channel her spiritual approach to painting.
